Not a Born Leader? How Dr. Block Uses SOPs for Stress-Free Dental Leadership | FF

One employee leaving changed the entire way this practice operated.

Not because they were impossible to replace…

But because nobody realized how much knowledge lived only inside that one person’s head.

A practice owner (Eric Block) recently shared how losing a longtime front desk team member exposed huge gaps in systems, training, and communication.

That failure ended up becoming one of the best things for the business.

Here’s what I learned:

1) A lot of businesses are running on memory, not systems.

Things feel smooth… until the person holding everything together leaves.

Then simple tasks suddenly become stressful.

2) Leadership got easier once expectations became visible.

Not louder.

Not stricter.

Just clearer.

When workflows, setups, scripts, and protocols were documented, the team stopped guessing and started moving with more confidence.

3) One of the best lines from the conversation was:

“The team finally had the answers to the test.”

That’s what great SOPs actually do.

They remove uncertainty.

People perform better when they don’t feel like they’re constantly trying to read someone’s mind.

A lot of stress inside businesses isn’t caused by bad people.

It’s caused by undocumented knowledge.
