ADA Opens Comment on Proposed Standards for Anesthetic Cartridges, Waterline Quality

Edited by Dentaltown staff

The American Dental Association’s Standards Program has opened a public review period on two proposed ANSI/ADA standards covering single-use local anesthetic cartridges and the microbiological quality of dental procedural water, with comments due June 10.

The first proposal, ANSI/ADA Standard No. 190, Dentistry — Single-Use Dental Cartridges for Local Anesthetics, sets performance and safety requirements for the disposable cartridges used in dental local anesthesia. It was developed by ADA Standards Working Group 4.84, which addresses syringes. The standard incorporates the color-coding system adopted by the ADA Council on Scientific Affairs in 2003 for identifying anesthetic agents.

The second proposal, ANSI/ADA Standard No. 207, Dentistry — Microbiological Quality of Dental Procedural Water — Requirements for Manufacturers, was developed by ADA Standards Working Group 6.48 on Air and Water Treatment Systems. The document establishes microbiological quality requirements for the manufacturers of dental units, mobile dental units, portable dental units, stand-alone ultrasonic scalers, lasers, and products used to treat or monitor dental procedural water.

Dental procedural water is used during patient care across general, surgical, orthodontic, and hygiene procedures, and microbiological monitoring is intended to identify failures in clinical waterline performance before they reach the patient. The proposed standard is positioned alongside existing federal recommendations on dental unit water quality from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The ADA Standards Program operates through volunteer working groups under the ADA Standards Committee on Dental Products, which produces consensus standards recognized by ANSI and frequently incorporated by reference into U.S. Food and Drug Administration recognized consensus standards for medical devices. The 2020 edition of Standard No. 190 is currently recognized by the FDA.

Comments on both proposed documents can be submitted to the ADA Standards Program through its All Interested Parties Review of Dental Standards page. The review period closes June 10.
