The Soft Food Diet: Surgery Day! So, What Did I Eat?

The Soft Food Diet: Surgery Day! So, What Did I Eat?

In the week leading up to the big day, I spent countless hours prepping meals for the freezer and a few for the fridge. I took the anti-anxiety meds the night before, as instructed, and planned something easy to eat for the morning.

On the day of the surgery, I woke up in a bit of a daze. I had a frozen bean and rice burrito—organic and gluten-free. It was way more carbs than I would usually have in one meal, but it was a special occasion that required both protein and carbs for maximum effect. I remember being woken up mid-surgery to drink a meal replacement shake and take more meds, repeating the process again that evening for "dinner."

That first day was pretty rough. I ate only so I could take the pain meds. My diet consisted of sugar-free Jell-O (lemon or lime flavor) and Koia protein shakes. These shakes have a low sugar content, which is important for me, and they come in a variety of flavors that are reminiscent of childhood favorites like Fruit Loops, Cinnamon Toast Crunch, or Cocoa Puffs. I pretended I was a kid again to make the healing process a bit more of a fun adventure.

By day three after surgery, I was ready to get a bit more adventurous with my food. I had my first cup of coffee in days, paired with organic applesauce mixed with low-fat cottage cheese and topped with ground clove spice. The contrast of the warm coffee and the cold breakfast mixture definitely lifted my spirits. Clove spice has been used in dentistry for centuries to ease toothaches and other dental pain. It has natural anti-inflammatory and antifungal properties and also numbs the gums. Plus, I find the taste reminiscent of an Easter or Christmas ham spiked with cloves.

This combination works with any fruit. Just this morning, I sprinkled cloves on sliced plums and drizzled honey on top for a snack. I’ve also tried it on peaches, pears, apples, and pineapple, all with the same delicious and delightful results. More cloves, please!

Next week, I'll share a pre-made egg dish that I heat and eat.
