I've been marketing dentists all over the country for about a decade. This time, I've learned a lot about how they interpret information. Understanding how to best communicate with my clients has allowed me to provide custom marketing solutions promptly.
I know each dentist I meet is different, but for fun, I've identified the three types of dentists I most enjoy working with. Here it goes…
The Perfectionist: These meticulous professionals enjoy big cases, cosmetic work, and advanced services. When interviewing a perfectionist, they'll often mention how they are "really good dentists" technically. Many general dentists, prosthodontists, endodontists, and oral surgeons fall into this category. They boast about their low failure rates and extensive continuing education. They're excited about the latest technology and love discussing their gadgets. Perfectionists often have artistic hobbies like photography. They want a website that showcases everything they can do, so I help them prioritize information for the best ROI. Establishing myself as an expert and showing my own perfectionist tendencies makes for smooth sailing. I explain every design choice thoroughly and ensure to set deadlines to prevent paralysis by analysis. Perfectionists are great clients because they are open communicators and provide valuable feedback. My team and I excel at embracing their qualities, which makes them excellent at dentistry and patient care.
The People Person: Often entering the field due to a parent or relative who was a dentist, this dentist loves building relationships with patients. They are community-oriented and value giving back through mission trips or local involvement. Their team enjoys working with them, and they prioritize team training. However, they can run late due to engaging in lengthy conversations. They feel energized by changing patients' lives through dentistry but sometimes feel guilty about marketing. I often explain how marketing benefits their community by increasing awareness of their services. Orthodontists in this category excel by building bonds with patients, referring doctors, and local business owners. These sociable dentists are easy to market once they overcome the belief that "marketing is unnecessary or bad." They have a hard time letting go of employees but eventually see the benefits of connecting with more great patients through marketing.
The Business Person/CEO: This type is my personal favorite because I relate to them the most. They view their practice as a business and embrace their role as CEO, aiming to maximize financial potential. They are motivated by money and understand what it takes to grow a business. They meticulously review monthly reports and readily discuss any discrepancies. They know precisely how many new patients they get monthly and their sources. They attend business-related CE courses and consider hiring associates and opening new locations. They build relationships and appreciate technology, marketing these points for mutual benefit. Confident and decisive, they don’t hesitate to let go of underperforming employees. The challenge with this type is ensuring they stick with a marketing campaign long enough to see results. Setting realistic expectations is key.
All our clients aim to grow their businesses and excel at serving their communities by providing excellent oral health. They all love helping people and have some strengths in business. I chose to focus exclusively on marketing solutions for dentists because I saw a need for ethical, tailored solutions. Many companies don't take the time to understand each dentist's specific goals and pain points. I love the field of dentistry and working with dentists and their teams. It's rewarding to contribute to a field that is often undervalued and underappreciated by the general public. Through marketing, we educate the community about the importance of oral healthcare.
