Shortly after this young Townie purchased her Hoover, Alabama, practice in June 2020, she discovered she was pregnant. To help ensure she could thrive at being both a dentist and a mother, she bought the condo above her office and transformed it into a staffed child care center and employee lounge.

Henderson’s practice subverts typical office design thanks to a digital workflow, which means the lab and mill can be close to patient treatment rooms without worry about noise or visible mess—and required fewer changes or disruptions when COVID-19 aerosol protocols were introduced

This Townie, who practices on Chicago’s Magnificent Mile, renovated his practice and signed a new 15-year lease in the middle of the pandemic. While the remodel was initially focused on aesthetic upgrades, Dr. Daniel Aneszko switched his focus to infection control. He shares some of the challenges he faced during the remodel—which earned him the 2020 ADA Design Innovation Award in the redesign category—as well as advice for others looking to enhance their spaces.

After he was diagnosed with oral cancer in July, this Townie had less than two weeks to find a locum who could help keep his practice open for months while he recuperated from surgery. Over eight hours, five surgeons removed half his tongue, transplanted skin and the radial artery from his left hand to his left tongue, and grafted skin from his thigh to cover his arm. The ordeal left him with “a burning desire to make the best of my second chance in life,” he says.
