There is a multitude of reasons dentistry is a great profession. However, with the rewards, there's also a price to be paid.
A few of the rewarding aspects of dentistry are the opportunity to be your own boss, a flexible lifestyle, earning a good salary, and transforming lives. These rewards bring on a plethora of challenges at a high price. Dentistry is a stressful profession most dentists spend the day at a high-speed, upside down and backward pace. There is the juggling act of balancing life and work, the stress managing a team, confinement, fear of rejection, approval addiction, to name a few. The wake of these challenges, begin to take a toll on one's mental and physical well-being, affecting life personally and professionally.
Boundaries must be set. Don't allow the balance scales to bottom out, weighed down by challenges suddenly. You have a choice. So here are a few tips to help establish boundaries to balance life and dentistry.
1. Don't allow dentistry to control your life – you take ownership of your life. Don’t take office stress home. Enjoy home more than the office.
2. Get outside as often as possible – nature is nurturing for your mental, physical and emotional health.
3. Put your cell phone down – disconnect daily, start with five minutes.
By setting boundaries, the balance of work/life begin to equalize a little more. There is a greater reward allowing you to enjoy life at a slower speed, right side up and forward while increasing proficiency at the office.
