He had the idea first.

But someone else launched it before him.

A recent Fail Forward conversation unpacked how one entrepreneur (David Jenyns) lost what he thought was his “big break”… only to realize the setback shaped the way he moves forever.

Here’s what I learned:

1) “Ideas don’t expire. Opportunities do.”
The market rarely rewards originality alone. Someone else is often thinking about the same thing at the same moment. Speed quietly becomes the separator.

2) “Emotion says stop. Momentum says continue.”
He still launched after getting beaten to the punch. The media still picked it up. The opportunity wasn’t destroyed, only delayed in a different form.

3) “Sometimes the person ahead of you is actually being sent to you.”
Years later, the person who beat him to market became one of his closest friends. What first looked like competition eventually became connection.

One line from the episode stood out:

“You can come up with a great idea… and someone else is probably thinking the exact same thing at the same moment.”
