This course provides a comprehensive overview of bone regeneration procedures in implant dentistry, focusing on techniques aimed at restoring alveolar ridge dimensions and regenerating peri-implant bone to support implant placement and prosthetic rehabilitation. Participants will explore various hard tissue augmentation techniques including guided bone regeneration (GBR), onlay grafting, distraction osteogenesis and ridge splitting. Despite decades of application, there are still knowledge gaps regarding the impact of factors like implant surface/design, biomaterials and patient-related variables on outcomes. Through a detailed examination of biologic rationale, clinical protocols, diagnostic pathways, prognostic factors and risk analysis, participants will gain clarity on successful GBR implementation for different grades of bone defects. The course offers a step-by-step approach to surgical procedures with abundant visual aids, including clinical images and videos. Emphasis is placed on selecting appropriate barrier membranes, bone substitutes, and regenerative materials based on defect characteristics and biomaterial properties. The discussion also delves into the clinical potential, limitations and comparative efficacy of GBR versus other surgical techniques, drawing on both personal experience and recent scientific evidence to inform clinical practice.

Upon completion of this course, you should be able to:

  • Make a proper case-definition of periodontitis.
  •
  • Diagnose the presence of intrabony defects, which are candidates for regenerative therapy.
  •
  • Identify all risk factors according to a multi-level analysis.
  •
  • Select the right surgical technique to treat any kind of defect according to GTR principles.
  •
  • Make a biologically-oriented choice among the extensive set of biomaterials.
Dr. Giacomo Tarquini graduated with honors in dentistry and dental prosthetics from the University La Sapienza of Rome in 1994. He furthered his education by completing specialized training in periodontology at the Department of Periodontology of University La Sapienza of Rome. Currently, he operates a private practice in Rome, focusing on periodontology and implantology. Additionally, Tarquini serves as a consultant, professor, tutor, and lecturer across a range of dental specialties. Among his contributions to the field, he is the author of the textbook, "Techniques of Periodontal Surgery from Diagnosis to Therapy," and has published numerous articles.
