How to get chosen by patients online (step by step guide)

Read this slowly: The hardest-to-find dentist works the hardest for every patient. The dentist everyone finds first gets to pick who they work with, what they charge, and how full their schedule is.

The first step to being chosen online is being found online.

Getting found on Google as a dentist is fairly easy if you know the right method. Below, I’ll share the fastest way to be found on Google within a week.

Start by optimising your Google Business Profile. When a patient searches for “dentist in [city],” the local map pack appears first. It shows three listings of dentist Google Business Profiles in that area. Optimising your profile gives you a chance to show up at the top of city search results, even without SEO.

Among the signals Google checks for local rankings, Google reviews are the most powerful and easiest to manage. Review volume, average rating, and recency all boost your local ranking.

More reviews signal to Google that your practice has served many patients who shared their experiences. Google views this as proof of a legitimate practice and an online word of mouth referral, which helps show your practice to more people.

You can encourage patients to leave reviews after every appointment. Try placing a QR code on your front desk or setting up an automated system to request reviews.

I detailed the QR code method in my previous post: How to Get More Google Reviews in 2026.

This method helped a dental practice with zero reviews gather over 114 reviews and rank #2 on Google Maps in just two months.

If you’re in a small or mid-sized city and can gather 30+ reviews within a month, you’ll quickly rise to the top of Google listings. This is the fastest way to get found on Google.

But being found on Google isn’t enough. Google Maps can help you get a few patients, but curious and cautious patients rely on your website.

The problem is that many dental practices see their website as a business card or a way to attract new patients. They just add some info about the practice and a “call now” or “book an appointment” button on the homepage.

In contrast, successful dental practices see their website as a system that does three things well:
    1. Pre-educate patients
    2.
Pre-convince patients
    3.
Convert visitors to booked appointments 24/7

Very few do the last one well. Almost none succeed at the first two, which are crucial for the last to work effectively.

They forget that new patients landing on their website carry fears:
      ?  Fear of pain

?  Fear of being judged for how long it's been

?  Fear of a surprise bill

?  Fear of what they’ll find

Take a look at this dental practice:

The Fully Booked Practice

As soon as a patient lands on this page, all four fears are addressed.

?  Fear of pain: “Worried it’ll hurt?”

?  Fear of being judged: “Haven’t been in years?”

?  Fear of a surprise bill: Most financing options are listed to the right.

?  Fear of what they’ll find: Clear explanations are provided.

Each element on the page is there to help convince a stranger by 11PM to trust and book with your practice.

Scroll down to the service listing, and you’ll notice how it’s structured. It first lists patients' internal thoughts or problems, then suggests ideal solutions along with estimated time and cost. This reassures patients by clarifying what to expect and potential solutions, rather than just listing services.

Visit the website yourself and experience it as a patient. You’ll feel reassured at every step, so by the time you decide to call, you’ll have no questions left — only a desire to book.

These are just the initial steps to dominating your online presence. To find out exactly how Google ranks dental practices, I’ve broken everything down on Heavyclick. For dental practices, Google calls it "Your Money or Your Life" (YMYL for short).
