There has been much misinformation circulated about lasers in endodontics, both by laser and non-laser users alike. To fully understand the impact of placing an energy source within a root canal system, one must comprehend laser physics and fluid dynamics, as well as concepts such as laser patency, recapitulation, drainage and decompression, biofilm pre-conditioning, cleaning and disinfection. This lecture series will provide insight into this next-generation technology and change the way future endodontic therapy is contemplated, planned and performed. Laser-assisted endodontics is a comprehensive treatment that—if fully understood—allows dentists to rethink the way endodontics is performed and question legacy concepts that have long governed the specialty. The lecture series will explore this next-generation treatment and evolve the endodontic experience for dentists and patients.

Upon completion of this course, you should be able to:

  • Appreciate the significance and the challenge presented by the apical third of root canal systems in the management of apical periodontitis.
  •
  • Understand, considering CBCT findings, the pressing need for an improved approach to apical cleansing, specifically in the management of refractory and recurrent endodontic disease.
  •
  • Review the concepts of apical foramen cleaning and apical patency.
  •
  • Discuss biofilm in apical periodontitis and the limitations of current treatment protocols in the management of biofilm in complex root canal systems.
  •
  • Understand how lasers work and the role of lasers in radial apical cleansing and review their practical applications.
Dr. Justin Kolnick received his dental degree, cum laude, from the University of the Witwatersrand in South Africa, where he was the first dental school graduate to be awarded the University Scholarship for overseas postgraduate study. He received his postdoctoral endodontic training from Columbia University. Kolnick is committed to endodontic education, first as an associate clinical professor in endodontics at Columbia University and later as an attending at Westchester Medical Center, and an associate clinical professor in endodontics at New York Medical College. Although he no longer holds these positions, he continues to lecture on the subject nationally and internationally. He has also published several articles on endodontics. For the past 16 years, his experience and expertise in lasers have made a significant contribution to the development of a comprehensive, laser-assisted treatment concept in endodontics. Kolnick is in full-time private practice limited to endodontics in New York.
