How to Get Ahead of the Dental Hiring Crisis

How to Get Ahead of the Dental Hiring Crisis

Business matters

At the heart of the matter, a dental practice is a business and should be run like one. This includes investing and reinvesting in its employees and the practice itself. This starts at the onboarding process so new hires aren’t left feeling like they have to go it alone, which promotes failure and high turnover rates, and continues with encouraging professional development, among other ideas.

Boots on the ground

Get feedback directly from your employees. Ask how they perceive the practice and what changes they’d like to see made, including office space and types of offerings. Learn what is valued, and adapt based on what works and what doesn’t, including any who are resistant to change.

Plan for growth

The most successful businesses don’t stay the same but rather expand based on the needs of its employees and patients. But don’t just have some vague idea in your head. Put pen to paper and create a vision that will help move your practice forward and grow in the future, then hold yourself accountable with actionable metrics, such as patient demographics and attrition rate.

Set up for success

Make your expectations clear to employees by defining what shared cultural values look like and how those translate into day-to-day responsibilities. Even go so far as to acknowledge employees during daily communications or meetings and encourage others to do the same. Your success rate will be higher if you have buy-in from all employees, which then translates to the patient level.
