Staff Turnover: 5 Steps To End The Revolving Door Cycle!

I’ve been in numerous conversations with a disproportionate amount of dentists/practice owners experiencing frequent staff turnover, which made me think to talk about this.

Have you ever (new practices or existing) had your entire team to quit or need to be replaced at once? Your office feels like a revolving door with frequent turnover. You start spending an enormous amount of time and money training and retraining. Frustration builds, as you still must run the practice. Concentration becomes difficult while treating patents, especially if you were forced to hire an inexperienced. “What will my patients think” is a recurrent thought, and “will they go elsewhere because every time they come in there’s a different team.” The office lacks cohesiveness. Oh and don’t mention candidates that don’t show up for interviews.

The real problem is that with all that goes on in a dental practice combined with the fact that you must still see patients is that you just don’t see how you can stop to Don the Hat of human resources, ta-da! You feel forced to hire out of desperation. You get more of the same and it causes you to become physically as well as mentally drained. You keep repeating this cycle, and deep down inside, you know that some thing has to change. This will continue to affect your psyche, your patients’ experiences and care and eventually your numbers.

There are 5 simple steps you can employ to quickly change this scenario:

1)  Be intentional when hiring team members. Decide your ideal candidate and do not relax your standards.
2) Tailor your ad/marketing to the ideal person you are trying to hire.  Use words that have emphasis of who you want to hire.
3) Give specific instructions to applicants.  If an applicant cannot follow your requirements, this is a good indication of how they will be in your       office.
4) Set the tone for your practice and expectations from Day One.
5) Train, Train, Train.  This is so very important!

Resist the urge to hire out of desperation, or you will remain in the revolving door cycle.

Imagine if it didn’t have to be this way and you had your ideal team. You come in to the office daily, and you’re able to focus completely on patient care. It’s a calm atmosphere, and everything is seamless. Everyone on the team pitches in and knows their post. You’re able to start and end each day on time. Best of all, you’re able to leave work at work. Your mind is at ease.

My experience over the years with Dentistry is it’s not about short cuts or a quick fix solution. It’s about breaking down the issue and getting to the root of the problem, and that’s exactly what dentists/practice owners struggling with managing their practices really need.
