Manage priorities, not time
Much has been written about time management, but Stephen Covey thinks that’s the wrong approach. What we should focus on instead is managing our priorities. Putting first things first means saying yes to the important tasks that will move you forward, and saying no to the unimportant tasks that can be delegated or even eliminated.
With a successful succession plan as your end in mind, creating a great practice for your successor will be a priority. This means setting aside time regularly to work on the important tasks that will pay off in the end.
Create systems and you create more time
The most valuable practice for your successor is one that doesn't require a new owner to leap constantly from crisis to crisis, but which runs smoothly like a well-oiled machine. This is best accomplished by setting up systems for your practice.
These systems provide a framework that empowers your staff to make certain decisions and to consult you only when circumstances fall outside those parameters. Delegating urgent but unimportant tasks to others will free you from constant crisis management. Then you can spend more time on the important aspects of your business.
Once your systems are in place, make time to review them periodically so that they can constantly be improved. The goal should be to delight your patients while making the practice a great place to work.
