Its nine-o-clock on Saturday and the doorbell rings right on time. Dana and Peggy Rockey have arrived at the Robertson’s home to assemble the Robertson’s new Tower Garden. The big brown UPS box that arrived a week earlier was opened up and a handful of basic tools were set out ready for action. Previously, Dana had built and installed approximately 10 of these vertical gardens – three of them being his own. So, he was practically a pro.
Its not that David Robertson wasn’t capable of building things, but, marketing, strategy and communications plans were more of his thing. Robertson recalls misaligning the rolling wheels of his family’s Weber grill that he assembled, breaking a spark plug on his 1965 Chrysler Newport due to over-tightening, or eventually discovering that there was such a thing as ‘reversible lug nuts’ on his car when he was a teenager. Let’s just say that he welcomed the help.
Dana and David had the Tower Garden built in no time. Next, the Rockeys showed the Robertsons how to add the nutrients and maintain the ideal PH balance for the water. It was really easy. The last step was to add the seedlings to each of the 20 openings, set the timer for the water pump, and share a few more laughs.
“We’re really excited about growing our own fruits and vegetables. Where we live, the soil is mostly comprised of clay and it’s not easy to grow produce. Its something fun that we can do as a family that we have all been looking forward to.” said Robertson.
