FDA Bans Most Powdered Gloves
The Food and Drug Administration issued a final rule on Dec. 19 banning the use of most powdered medical gloves.

The rule, which went into effect Jan. 18, applies to patient examination gloves, powdered surgeon's gloves and absorbable powder for lubricating a surgeon's glove. The FDA proposed the ban in March, citing evidence that the gloves posed serious risks to patients, including airway and wound inflammation, postsurgical adhesions and allergic reactions.

In its summary of the rule, the FDA noted that the ban "does not apply to powder used in the manufacturing process" of nonpowdered gloves, "where that powder is not intended to be part of the final finished glove" and said "finished nonpowdered gloves are expected to include no more than trace amounts of residual powder from these processes, and the agency encourages manufacturers to ensure finished nonpowdered gloves have as little powder as possible."

Registration Now Open for AO's Multidisciplinary Annual Meeting
Registration is now open for the Academy of Osseointegration (AO)'s 2017 annual meeting. The meeting, held March 15–18, 2017, in Orlando, Florida, is a collaboration with the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, the American Academy of Periodontology and the American College of Prosthodontists. Those interested should register by Feb. 27 to take advantage of the advance registration discount.

The opening session will address the meeting theme very closely, relative to what clinicians do now versus 20 years ago: Dr. Jill Helms, DDS, PhD, from Stanford University, will present "Beauty, Reconsidered." The meeting will also feature a session on "The Business of Implant Dentistry." Moderated by Bill Ryan, this course will look at various practice delivery systems. The closing session will focus on the team approach to the treatment of various clinical problems.

The meeting's regional focus will be Latin America. Latin American speakers are included throughout the 2017 program to give meeting attendees a unique insight into the practice of implant dentistry in this region. Simultaneous translation in Spanish and Portuguese will be offered for the sessions held in the main meeting rooms.
