Higher Strength Veneers Offer More Restorative Options By: Robert Ibsen, DDS, OD, FAGD, FACD, FICD

When I first saw this patient he told me previous dentists told him they could change his smile. However, he did not want the options offered, caps or orthodontia (Fig. 1). I invited him to view a videotape, Rembrandt Veneers Made of Cerinate Porcelain—The Placement of Multiple Laminates. (1) After viewing the seven-minute video, he wanted his smile improved since no anesthetic was required because there would be no removal of sensitive tooth structure or need for temporaries.

The patient has a diastema between teeth 8 and 9 with edge-to-edge bite from tooth 7 to tooth 10 (Figs. 2 and 3). I modified the labial of tooth 9 and shortened teeth 6, 7, 8, and 9 (Figs. 4 and 5). The purpose of my modification was to accommodate occlusion. The modification was limited to the enamel and I did not create a prep with a definite finishing line. As a result, there was no need for a temporary. After taking an impression with 1st Impression-PVS (Den-Mat® Corporation’s polyvinylsiloxane impression material), eight veneers made of Cerinate porcelain were fabricated at the Cerinate Laboratory. The veneers were bonded with Tenure® Uni-Bond® (Fig. 6) and Ultra-Bond® Plus (Fig. 7). Figures 8 and 9 reveal the completed post-operative views.

I have asked myself this question many times, “Why was I chosen to treat his misaligned smile? This patient went to several dentists throughout his dental history and was faithfully seeing his most current dentist.” The answer is simple. Rembrandt Veneers made of Cerinate Porcelain have a higher strength than other porcelain veneers currently available. What does higher strength mean? Higher strength means we can preserve more tooth structure and create thinner porcelain veneers with predictable clinical success of 12–18 years. (2)

To summarize, higher-strength Rembrandt Veneers made of Cerinate Porcelain offer more restorative options for both dentists and patients. And, patients will more likely want their appearance improved when “grinding their teeth away” is not required.
