Accurate caries diagnosis and early intervention through technology

Tooth decay has been the long-standing nemesis of dentists around the world; this month, Dentaltown shares some of the technology and materials that have been developed to support the common goal of early detection and appropriate intervention. Transillumination and filters that can be applied to digital X-rays are examples of how technology can allow dentists to see better, while using a liquid caries detector is another way for clinicians to get a better look when excavating deep lesions. (The visual appearance of this product can provide an opportunity to help a patient understand the extent of a deep carious lesion.) It’s important to add that this list of products is not all-inclusive; rather, it’s a starting point for your consideration. Your experience and clinical judgment is always the final word.

CamX Spectra Caries Detection Aid
Air Techniques

CamX Spectra uses fluorescence to detect caries in fissures and smooth surfaces that may go unnoticed in X-ray images. Four violet LED lights stimulate metabolic products found in cariogenic bacteria, causing them to glow red, while healthy enamel glows green.

CamX Spectra’s Doppler radarlike images are easily understood and allow dentists to show patients how early intervention helps them and how it leads to more conservation and less excavation.

Users are guided through the caries removal process from pre- to postprocedure, ensuring that all carious dentin has been removed, and they can store and compare images over time to track the effect of treatment.

For more information, call 800-247-8324 or visit airtechniques.com.

  • Detects caries that may go unnoticed in X-ray images.
  • Guides users through the caries removal process from pre- to postprocedure.

CariVu Caries Detection Device
Dexis

CariVu is a compact, portable caries detection device that uses transillumination technology to support the identification of occlusal, interproximal and recurrent carious lesions and cracks. When the device bathes the tooth in safe, near-infrared light, enamel appears transparent while porous lesions trap and absorb the light. This allows clinicians to see through the tooth, exposing its structure and the actual structure of any carious lesions with high accuracy.

CariVu images also read like familiar X-ray images; lesions will appear as dark areas. This provides an edge over fluorescent imaging technologies because there is no need to clean the tooth of bacteria, calibrate the device, or become versed in the meaning of multiple color codes or numeric indicators.

For more information, call 888-883-3947 or visit dexis.com/carivu.

  • Compact, portable design.
  • Patented transillumination technology facilitates caries detection.
  • Images read like familiar X-ray images.

DOE SE Caries Detector Kit
DentLight

Using fluorescence imaging technology that combines a collimated high-power LED beam and a high-contrast fluorescence viewer, the DOE SE caries detector identifies abnormal tissue that might develop into oral cancer or dental caries through the contrast of green healthy fluorescence and dark abnormal tissue. Its high-power violet LED allows up to 4-inch working distance, and its small light head enables intraoral access for easy detection in the back-throat areas, where HPV-induced cancer develops.

Included in the kit are the DOE exam wand, a violet-light head, the fluorescence viewer, patient protection goggles, 100 barrier sleeves and a DVD training guide.

For more information, call 800-763-6901 or visit dentlight.com.

  • Small, cordless, and reliable.
  • Facilitates access to hard-to-reach areas, including the back of the throat.
  • Easy to document cases with office camera.

Logicon Caries Detector Software
Carestream Dental

Logicon Caries Detector Software is a unique and clinically proven tool for RVG imaging systems and CS imaging software. As an optional add-on module for the RVG 6100 and RVG 6200 digital radiography systems, Logicon is designed to help users detect and treat interproximal caries at an early stage and promote minimally invasive treatment options. In fact, it is the only commercially available software approved by the FDA for computer-aided radiographic caries diagnoses.

With Logicon Version 5.2, it only takes a few clicks to obtain a clear preview of a patient’s proximal caries. The software scans all proximal surfaces in a bite-wing radiograph automatically so dentists can easily plan treatment by selecting PreScan results and making manual calculations on the same screen. Users can even share the results with patients to improve communication and increase treatment acceptance.

For more information, call 800-944-6365 or visit carestreamdental.com.

  • The only commercially available software approved by the FDA.
  • Promotes minimally invasive treatment.
  • Facilitates treatment planning.

LUM: Sub-Enamel Illumination
Digital Doc

Digital Doc’s LUM extends the detection capabilities of the Iris camera with proven subenamel illumination diagnostic methods. A compact, easy-to-use tool, LUM provides instant documentation as well as detection of all findings.

LUM’s specialized LED technology works when the device is positioned so high-intensity light travels perpendicular to the plane of the tooth. In a tooth without impurities, the light will travel uninterrupted from the buccal surface to the lingual, which can be observed on the occlusal table of the tooth by its uniform illumination. When a tooth has impurities such as fractures or leaking amalgam, the light is dispersed, showing up clearly in near-X-ray-like images.

For more information, visit digi-doc.com/product/lum or call 800-518-1102.

  • Instant caries visualization and documentation.
  • Unique light positioning; the light travels perpendicular through the tooth.
  • Near-X-ray-like images.

Soprolife Intraoral Camera
Acteon North America

Featuring autofluorescence technology, the Soprolife intraoral camera provides users with the ability to detect tooth decay at different stages of its development, which allows them to determine the most adequate treatment. In Diagnosis Aid mode, Soprolife accurately identifies the development of occlusal and proximal carious lesions, potentially accelerates the decision-making process in treatment planning and provides safer options for patients by possibly reducing the number of X-rays.

Performance is enhanced in Treatment Aid mode, as Soprolife enables users to visually differentiate between infected and affected tissue in the excavated site.

Daylight Mode produces unequaled quality of images and not only enables dentists to communicate more effectively with their patients but also gives them the ability to see details that are invisible to the naked eye.

For more information, call 800-289-6367 or visit acteongroup.com.

  • Saves time by making a faster, more accurate diagnosis.
  • Protects patients by reducing the number of necessary X-rays.
  • Differentiates between healthy and infected tissue.
