This might be one of the cooler things we've come across in our many years of featuring innovators in dentistry. We
interviewed Dave Hodgson, co-owner of Total 3D Solutions, about his company's product, the Cinema ProMED.
Designed for dentists, this tool could help even the most fidgety patients stay calm and collected.
What is your background in the dental industry?
Hodgson:The system has been very popular in the entertainment industry for gaming and first-person view hobbyists. Its use in dentistry seemed clear: provide the patient with a positive, immersive distraction, and the dental procedure will become a relaxed and enjoyable event. The Cinema ProMED was introduced into the dental market in 2013.
You are in an elevator. A man asks what your company does. You have 15 seconds before the door opens. What do you say?
Hodgson: Easy. Our company provides a tool that complements the dentist's skills—great comfort and relaxation for the patient—which helps the clinician perform the procedure in a more efficient and less stressful manner, and provides a patient experience that makes them much more likely to return, and recommend the practice.

What is the philosophy at Cinema ProMED?
Hodgson: A relaxed patient equals an efficient procedure, a less stressed doctor and staff, and word-of-mouth advertising that cannot be beat.
Tell me about the Cinema ProMED system, and what your company provides.
Hodgson: The Cinema ProMED system is basically a tool that provides patients with an "escape" from the sights and sounds of the dental operatory, virtually placing them inside
of a movie theatre. The system consists of video glasses with 3D and 2D capabilities, and high-quality head phones. (The volume can be controlled by the doctor or staff to allow for
communication with the patient.) It is equipped with eye shields, which provide the dual
benefit of eye protection along with an immersive environment. And, unlike when viewing monitors, the patient doesn't have to look around the two faces and four hands that are busy with the procedure. The patient is truly in his/her own theater!
Connected to virtually any media device (smartphone, DVD player, TV, streaming video from the internet, etc.), the glasses serve essentially as a high-resolution (1080p equivalent) entertainment system with 3D capabilities. It's excellent for anxious patients, as well as others. It is especially valuable for
longer appointments where patient discomfort leads to fidgety patients and less efficient procedures. (Not to mention keeping the patient "patient" and occupied while you're checking on a hygiene patient!) It is small and lightweight and does not interfere with clinician access. Its adjustable diopter settings allow for proper focus for just about every patient.
We've heard great feedback from both patients and dentists. If a patient uses it once they will likely ask for it every time they come back, plus they tell their friends about it! One experience we were told about was a patient who forgot to take her prescription anxiety medication before an implant
appointment. They were about to cancel the appointment when the doctor asked her to just put on the Cinema ProMED system, which he had just purchased the week before. The patient put on the glasses and sat comfortably through the entire procedure with only local anesthesia.
What would you consider to be the "best kept secret" with your company?
Hodgson: If there's a best "kept" secret, it's that not everybody has heard about the Cinema ProMED system, and that it helps dentists to be more efficient while also attracting and retaining patients due to a positive patient experience.
How can a practice begin working with you?
Hodgson: Give us a call at (855) 969-3301, email us at info@cinemapromed.com or visit us online at Cinemapromed.com.
What kind of service can dentists expect when they pick up the phone and call you?
Hodgson: Whether it's a customer service rep, a sales rep, or one of the owners, the dentist can expect to be guided through any problem related to the implementation of the Cinema ProMED system.
