Dr. Dean Mersky of Manhattan Beach, California, who has been in practice for over 26 years, has placed nearly 2,400 Captek crowns and bridges. In the following, he explains to DentalTown readers what prompted him to initially try a Captek restoration. There has always been a yearning for a more esthetic material than gold restorations. Certainly, gold has served us well over the decades. But for many of us the esthetics and cleanliness of these restorations have always been much less than desired, even with acrylic facings. Most of us have experienced the same successes and failures, and the same disappointments and triumphs. So it was with great caution that I first started using Captek. In fact, it wasn't until speaking with a friend of mine, Dr. George Freedman, that I was willing to give it a try. I started with one, a very difficult preparation on tooth #5. I had the lab fabricate both a Captek, and a normal PFM for the same tooth. It was clear to me after comparison in the mouth that the Captek crown fit better, and had better color. But, I had a larger question: What would be the long-term tissue response? Happily, it has been excellent. The tissue is healthier today, seven years later, than it was before the date of preparation.
The Captek Advantage
I’ve found with Captek there is no learning curve, simply use it in any manner you choose. Unlike all ceramics, Captek is not technique sensitive. You can use Captek exactly the same as a typical PFM. Captek is not a traditional cast metal; it is a metal composite that is pneumatically applied over a refractory die, thus eliminating all casting errors. The Captek coping is formed first with a central lattice of platinum and palladium, the Captek "P" layer. This is the reinforced internal structure unique to Captek. The lattice is then infused with 98% gold and 2% silver, the Captek "G" Layer. The gold is drawn in and through the internal "P" layer. Both the internal and external surfaces of the Captek coping are "G" layer, hence the true gold color of the coping, and the warm hues of the porcelain covers the coping. Captek has numerous advantages over both PFM's and all porcelain crowns: less buccal reduction, warmer hue, uses any cement, any margin design, and clinically proven to collect up to 91% less plaque.
Upgrade your case to Captek
With Captek crowns and bridges I have seen predictable and outstanding results over seven years. I wouldn't think of using anything else, and urge every dentist to at least give it a try. Your patients will be glad you did! *Terms and conditions apply
