Perhaps one of the most difficult elements of creating a quality blog for your practice is coming up with consistently good dental blog topics. Working with an SEO copywriter and professional blogger helped me to understand what makes a good dental blog topic vs. a not-so-good dental blog idea. I want to share these insights with you to help your efforts in creating a dental practice website that ranks on search engines and converts.

3 Ways to Identify a Good Dental Blog Topic

One blog can take several hours to write, edit, and post to your website. The last thing you want is to waste time posting a blog that isn’t going to engage readers or benefit your website. To prevent wasting your time, ask the following questions about each dental blog idea you come up with before you start working on it:

  1. Is this something my target audience wants or needs to know about?
  2.
  3. Do related keywords to this topic get hits each month? Or rather, are people searching about this topic? (Remember, the goal is to hit on topics and keywords that people search for, therefore, helping more people find your dental practice website via your blog).
  4.
  5. Can you add to this topic in a way that other blogs have not? Do a quick google search and check out the top-ranking articles about the topic—can you write something better or more informative? If yes, go for it!

5 Inspirational Ways to Come Up with an Unlimited Number of Good Dental Blog Topics

Now that you know how to identify a good dental blog topic, it’s time to start coming up with things to write about. Drawing a blank? The following 5 tips will help inspire your mission to create a winning dental blog.

#1. What do your patients ask you most often?

Sit down and start writing a list of the most common questions patients ask. It won’t hurt to chat with your fellow dental assistants and office administration, as they take a lot of patient questions each day. This list will serve as a great starting point to come up with a lot of blogs. After all, these are the things your patients have told you they want to know—which is exactly what you want to share.

#2. A service + local keyword

As a dentist you likely offer a variety of services—teeth cleaning, fillings, crowns, Invisalign, and so forth. Take these services and turn them into blogs. To compete with all the other dentists out there writing about similar services, add a localized keyword.

For example, let’s say you want to write a blog titled “Signs You Need a Dental Filling,” the localized version of this blog could be titled: “Signs You Need to Visit a [your location/city name] Dentist for a Dental Filling.”

As a result of adding localized keywords, it’ll be easier for your blog to rank on search engines because there’s less competition. Plus, you are trying to target people in your area anyways, so it’s a win-win.

You could use this same trick for a plethora of blogs, some more examples include:

  • What is the average cost of Invisalign in Calgary
  •
  •  Toronto dental fillings: here’s everything you need to know

#3. Check out blog ideas on top-ranking dental sites

Visit other dental blogs to see what your competition is blogging about. Refrain from copying them exactly. Instead, use their blog ideas to create spin-offs of your own.  For instance, you may notice a blog titled “How to Save Money at the Dentist” is generating a lot of shares and likes. You could take this same topic and tweak it a little, by titling it “5 ways to spend less money at the dentist while maintaining healthy teeth.” From there, create your own insightful tips that are unique from the tips offered in the inspiration blog.

#4.  Talk about recent studies and advancements in oral health

The latest studies on oral health offer interesting facts and statistics for you to share on your dental blog. Regularly check out sites like the Journal of Dental Research and the American Dental Association to see the latest studies.

The Journal of Dental Research recently published several articles that could inspire your next dental blog topic, including how to manage dental care for older populations, the best ceramic restorative materials for natural teeth, and how a family history of smoking can increase the risk of periodontal disease.

#5. Shed light on new office equipment

Recently upgrade your x-ray machine or add a new teeth cleaning device to your arsenal of tools? Use your blog to talk about it and the associated benefits, and then casually toot your own horn. After all, you offer it and so you earned it!

The keyword “dental x ray” gets thousands of hits per month, you could use this keyword to your advantage by writing a blog about the different types of dental x-ray machines, including the one you use in-office. Explain how instant results are only possible with newer model x-ray machines, like the one in your office. As a result, you provide informative material while also selling your dental practice.
