Orthodontic treatment has traditionally followed a reactive process, with periodic adjustments, unclear timelines, and outcomes that develop over time. SMILE-FX® Orthodontic & Clear Aligner Studio is introducing a different approach with the launch of AI Braces™ by SMILE-FX®, a proprietary method designed to bring greater clarity, efficiency, and structure to orthodontic care.
The SMILE-FX® AI Braces™ system combines artificial intelligence with high-resolution 3D CBCT (Cone Beam Computed Tomography) imaging to create a complete treatment plan before the first bracket is placed. Patients can see a projected path from the beginning, including how their smile is expected to progress at key stages.
A Planned Start Instead of Mid-Treatment Guesswork
At the center of the system is a detailed digital model of the patient’s teeth and bite. This model acts as a “digital twin,” simulating tooth movement across the full treatment timeline before treatment begins.
“Traditional orthodontics has always involved some degree of trial and error,” said Dr. Tracy M. Liang, DDS, MS, board-certified orthodontist and founder of SMILE-FX®. “With AI Braces™ by SMILE-FX®, we can show patients a projected visualization of their smile at month 3, month 6, and at completion. The AI functions as a co-pilot, enhancing clinical judgment while enabling a level of precision that wasn’t previously possible.”
This predictive planning approach is also designed to reduce mid-treatment revisions, as AI-assisted modeling helps anticipate potential complications before they occur.
Inside the VIP Tech Suite
Treatment begins in the SMILE-FX® VIP Tech Suite, where traditional impressions are replaced by high-speed intraoral optical scanners and comprehensive 3D CBCT imaging that capture dental anatomy in submillimeter detail, instantly creating a digital replica of the patient’s jaw structure.
This digital model is processed through the SMILE-FX® proprietary AI engine, trained on the practice’s own case data combined with established orthodontic research and industry datasets. The system analyzes alignment, spacing, bite relationships, and facial biometrics to calculate an efficient path of movement for every individual tooth.
The result is a frame-by-frame treatment simulation that Dr. Liang can review, adjust, and approve before the first appointment. Once finalized, the system dictates the precise position for each bracket.
3D-printed indirect bonding trays are then used to place brackets with high accuracy, supported by same-day fabrication for a more efficient treatment start.
Faster Timelines and Fewer Appointments
With more detailed planning at the start, AI Braces™ by SMILE-FX® is designed to reduce the need for ongoing adjustments. In the experience of SMILE-FX®, some qualifying cases have been completed in as little as 4 to 6 months, compared to the typical range of 12 to 36 months.
When precision is engineered at the beginning, the inefficiencies of traditional orthodontics are significantly reduced.
The practice also uses the FDA-cleared DentalMonitoring app, which allows patients to submit scans from home. The clinical team reviews progress remotely, reducing the number of in-office visits while maintaining close oversight.
The Rescue Clinic for Complex Cases
SMILE-FX® has also become a destination “Rescue Clinic” for patients who have experienced complications or unsatisfactory results elsewhere. The AI-driven diagnostic capabilities of AI Braces™ by SMILE-FX® enable deeper analysis of complex cases and more customized solutions.
A Different Approach to Orthodontic Care
Many orthodontic advancements have focused on materials such as brackets or aligners. SMILE-FX® focuses on how treatment is planned and executed.
The AI Braces™ by SMILE-FX® system is built around predictive intelligence, not just hardware. This approach supports more predictable outcomes and is especially useful for cases that require detailed analysis.
“We are not competing on whether braces are metal or ceramic, visible or invisible,” Dr. Liang said. “We are competing on precision.”
Experience Behind the Innovation
Dr. Liang is a Cornell University graduate who completed her orthodontic residency at the University of Minnesota. She is a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics and has over a decade of specialized training. She is also recognized as an Invisalign Pink Diamond Provider and received the Evergreen Award for Best Orthodontic Experience and Service in South Florida in 2025.
