Why Many Relationships Fail After Marriage

The number of divorces has been on a significant rise over the years as newlyweds deal with marriage uncertainty. After tying the knot and vowing to be happy ever after, and for better or worse, many couples suddenly get struck by the tough marriage realities.

Many couples consider separation or divorce after feeling betrayed, poor communication, lack of respect, economic reasons, differences in beliefs, and maybe changes in intimacy and desire for one another. Here are the most common reasons relationships fail after marriage.

Poor communication

This is the foundation of any relationship, whether a friendship or even business and, more importantly, an intimate relationship. Interactive counselling is a great platform for marriage counselling, helping couples communicate better and infuse a new life into their slowly breaking away relationship. The platform offers the best counsellors who will walk with you every step of the way to rekindle your relationship.

Relationships in marriage can end when couples don’t effectively communicate. When this happens, it is important to seek the help of a marriage counselor. Building trust, connecting, and airing out issues are only possible through effective communication.

Differences in beliefs and values

Religious and cultural beliefs can take a toll on a relationship because people have different experiences growing up and these follow them to marriage. Individuals may disagree on how they want to raise their children. One party prefers to raise kids in a religious setting while the other party doesn’t. This can easily build up to divorce.

It may also go down to who an individual is and what values they hold dear. If these values collide, couples will most likely feel they don’t share things in common. Values of honesty, respect, love, and care bring people together, and if they are absent, relationships also fail.

Changes in life priorities

Priorities change in the course of the marriage. Just like in life, new goals come along, plans and passions may affect how one person in the relationship views life. Depending on how long couples have been married, concerns on different issues such as children's needs at different ages, asset distribution may shift from time to time. If parties don’t adapt to these changes, the bonds that hold the marriage may grapple.

These factors may not seem like an issue during the courting process, plus they may be blinded to this fact, and one only comes to the realization when they are heavily invested in the marriage.

Absence of intimacy and sex

This is one of the top causes of divorce in many marriages today. There will be no reason to be with someone who has no interest in being intimate with you. There are many reasons when intimacy fails and couples no longer engage in sex.

Some of the factors include a recent affair or one of the parties having a higher sex drive, and the other partner having no desire for sex. The only way to solve this problem is to identify the causes and deal with them as soon as possible. Couples can consider therapy and begin following steps to ensure their sexual needs are fulfilled.

Extra-marital affair

When the needs are not fulfilled in a relationship, the person will find an alternative to fulfill them. Many factors lead one of the parties in a relationship into cheating. We can talk about not getting their sexual need met or the influence of drugs and the wrong company when outside the house.

One may also feel their emotional needs are not being fulfilled besides the physical needs. Poor communication and lack of respect for one’s partner can also lead to divorce. When a partner feels they are not being listened to or respected, they’ll find an alternative from another willing party.
