One of the first questions we get from almost any dentist we speak with is how to get more five-star reviews for their practice online.

With sites like YelpGoogle Reviews, and other assorted review sites, it only takes one bad review to leave a stain on your online profile. Trust us when we say that the one patient who had a bad experience with you is louder than the 99 other patients who had  a great experience.

Studies have shown that people are far more likely to leave a negative review than a positive one, as anger fuels action. The expectation of a visit to the dentist is that it should be a mostly-positive experience, and thus if everything goes well, there is little motivation write a good review.

But how can you encourage your patients who had these good experiences to leave a positive review about you on the internet? We asked several of the highest-rated dentists in the AreaDentist database on how they're able to get so much patient engagement when it comes to online reviews.

Every single one of them said the same thing: "You just have to ask!"

We get it, things can be busy in the office, and maybe the last thing you want to do is open up the door to what might turn into a longer conversation, but every single dentist we spoke with who had a large quantity of positive reviews said it's been the number one thing they do to get those reviews.

"Not only does this encourage more positive reviews, but it also prevents negative reviews from getting published, when I ask my patients at the end of their visit for any comments on our service," said one highly-reviewed dentist from Spokane, Washington. "If they have something to complain about, I give them an avenue to tell me directly. This seems like it prevents them from writing anything negative about me online. And the patients that say they're happy with my service, I simply let them know it would help me out if they were willing to write a quick review online. This seems to work well."

It makes total sense, right? When you ask a patient if they have any comments or concerns, they will feel heard by you, and will be far less likely to turn to other avenues to air their grievances.

Your patients want to feel heard, and giving them your full attention immediately following their visit is both a great way to prevent any negative reviews from them as well as give you an avenue to ask for more positive reviews.
