Developing Leaders for the Dream Team

Developing Leaders for the Dream Team

“It’s not enough for a leader to have vision, energy, drive, and conviction.  If you want to see your dream come to fruition, you must learn how to develop the leaders around you.” John Maxwell.

I am fortunate to have a great team of dental rock stars working side-by-side with me in my dental offices and a great team of administrators and volunteers working with me both in the US and in Thailand for Smiles on Wing, my charitable organization.  It took hard work and coaching on my part to train me and these leaders.  I would not be able to do what I am doing (advanced dental training, managing two dental practices, being the Executive Director/President of Smiles on Wings, and taking care of my invalid husband) without the help of these leaders.  In his book, Developing the Leaders Around You, John Maxwell said that it’s important for leaders to produce leaders and these leaders will determine your success.

In order for me to become a leader, I had to train myself to be the leader that I want to see as well.  I had to undergo extensive coaching and worked very hard to change how I do things.  Now, I am happy to train the new leaders that can help me succeed in what I do.  Whether it is my dental practices or Smiles on Wings, I worked hard to train the future leaders.

These are the expectations and qualities that I look for in our team members:

Positiveness: the ability to work with people  and see people and situations in a positive way

Servanthood: the willingness to submit, play team ball, and follow the leader

  • Growth potential: a hunger for personal growth and development; the ability to keep growing as the job expands
  •
  • Follow-through: the determination to get the job done completely and with consistency
  •
  • Loyalty: the willingness to always put the leader and the organization above personal desires
  •
  • Resiliency: the ability to bounce back when problems arise
  •
  • Integrity: trustworthiness and solid characters; consistent words and walk
  •
  • “Big picture” mindset: the ability to see the whole organization and all of its needs
  •
  • Discipline: the willingness to do what is required regardless of personal mood
  •
  • Gratitude: an attitude of thankfulness that becomes a way of life

Start by developing your leadership skill then you can develop others.  You cannot achieve your goals alone.  Have your vision, have the right team players, have a system then train everyone the basic of how to get things done, give them the responsibilities, and let go of the control and let your team do their work and shine.

“Those closest to the leader will determine the success level of that leaders.” John Maxwell.
