The $10,000 A Day Dentist was a lecture I gave to my 2016 5M Mastermind. By April, each of the 9 members had had their best months in their careers and many $10T days. Trek through The Dental Jungle with us to see why and how that happened.

The Dental Jungle – Eliminate Wasted Time

In the dental jungle there are 101 stories; this is the fifth in a series of these stories. We follow Dr. Alex Middleton, The Guide, as he again gives sage advice to his dentist friend, Dr. Edward Boyle, an extremely compassionate individual.*

Dr. Edward Boyle had a yearning to experience life in third world countries and to help make a difference for those with no real opportunity to have what he had.  Dr. Boyle had been in practice ten years and was happy with his situation. He was becoming a pillar of the community and well-respected among his peers. As a Rotarian whose motto is Service Above Self, he was seeking ways to use his dental skills for higher purposes.

His interests were many; his passion was great for serving others and being mission-minded topped the list. To that Dr. Alex Middleton asked, “Ed, how much free time is enough?” If you want a fulfilled life, you need to carve out a schedule that allows you to be fulfilled in each area of your life and if you need more time to do what is your passion; you need to find a way to support your “free time activities” with your “productive time activities.” Alex felt that Edward’s main need was to solve the engineering issues of being productive as a dentist so that he could also be productive in the social and spiritual arena. With this in mind, Alex began to develop a prescription for success for Dr. Boyle wherein the key was time.

CAPACITY: ELIMINATE WASTED TIME

We all have eight hours in a typical work day. How do some dentists produce twice as much in that time as others? Could you see yourself working half as many hours making the same income or working the same hours as now but earning twice the income? The difference between a $10,000 A Day Dentist and a $5,000 A Day Dentist may be just the matter of not wasting time!

When do you arrive at work? Are you ready to rock and roll at 8 a.m.? Do you have an 8@8 or 3 in 3 mindset? Does your team share your penchant for being on time and getting it done efficiently?

Do you insist on your team preplanning, being on time and filling up all available time on your schedule? After all, it is a mindset. Your capacity to produce a lot of dentistry is to value and protect your time. A doctor’s time is worth a lot.

Delegation of non-essential duties creates ample time to be more productive. A dentist’s most productive use of his time is to do that which only he or she by law can do and delegate the rest. Do you delegate well… or do you need help learning how to position yourself to delegate more to your own team, a team that you can trust to excel?

Effectively marketing for the higher-end services also provides the opportunity to be highly productive. Keeping a patient in for longer, well-planned appointments is a far more productive day than ten smaller appointments.

Increase your capacity by reducing wasted time. When you have more capacity you have bought back your time. This allows you to achieve a better balance in your life.
