Terminating the Dentist/Patient Relationship

Terminating the Dentist/Patient Relationship
Encountering a patient who is particularly difficult or non-compliant can be problematic. A dentist is not required to maintain a relationship with a non-compliant or difficult patient.

If a patient is non-compliant it may put a dentist at risk of being associated with an adverse outcome, which could become challenging. Other reasons to terminate a patient relationship may include failure to keep scheduled appointments, drug-seeking behavior, or inappropriate or rude behavior.

If there is a pattern of non-compliance and difficult behavior from a client, the dentist should terminate the relationship verbally and in writing. A termination in writing should be sent by regular and certified mail with return receipt requested, and/or UPS/Fedex.

The patient must be given written notice of the termination.

To ensure a consistent approach to the difficult task of discharging a patient from care, a dental practice should have a standard procedure in place for discharging a patient.
