Magnesium-Calcium Rinse Eased Burning Mouth Syndrome Pain in Trial

A magnesium-calcium oral rinse reduced pain more than placebo in adults with primary burning mouth syndrome, according to a randomized controlled trial published July 20 in BMC Oral Health.

The double-blind trial enrolled 116 adults and assigned them in equal numbers to the active rinse or a placebo. Participants rinsed with 10 milliliters for 60 seconds, three times daily, over eight weeks.

At week 8, the treatment group showed a greater reduction in burning pain on a numeric rating scale, with a mean difference of 1.7 points compared with placebo. Among treated participants, 62% achieved at least a two-point reduction, versus 32% in the placebo group.

The active group also reported significant improvements in oral-health-related quality of life, measured by the Oral Health Impact Profile-14, and in xerostomia symptoms. Adverse events were mild and comparable between the two groups.

The researchers framed the rinse as a way to modulate the ionic microenvironment of the oral mucosa, describing it as a local strategy for a condition whose current treatments are often limited by systemic side effects.

The authors cautioned that the follow-up period was short, the trial was registered retrospectively, and the study evaluated one specific formulation, so replication and longer-term data are needed before the rinse can be considered an established treatment.

The trial was conducted by Carrió and colleagues across institutions in Spain, Egypt, Jordan, and Lebanon. The authors reported no competing interests.
