Instrumentation to prepare a molar for the world’s most healthy PFG

Speaker: Marshall White, D.M.D.

Synopsis: While most dentists see the PFM as the strongest cosmetic alternative to a full cast crown for molar teeth, concerns remain about the beauty of the PFM crown and the periodontal effects of margin placement to facilitate more natural looking aesthetics. The past decade or so has seen the emergence of a unique High Noble composite metal for use as a thin yellow gold coping in a PFM crown with aesthetics that are superior to, and strength that’s on par with, the conventional PFM. For the doctor, preparation design is a major factor in the success of a crown, and rotary instrumentation has continued to evolve in a way that better accomplishes that goal. The dentate carbide bur has been a welcome addition to our armamentarium and one such instrument possesses attributes that make it well-suited for a margin and overall prep. This presentation will introduce some of the science behind the choice of this metal composite and present a molar preparation design to receive PFM crowns created using this material; a preparation design that often can be accomplished with a single dentate carbide instrument.

Educational objectives: Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to achieve the following:

  1. Recognize and describe a dentate bur as well as its advantages
  2. Understand a technique for crown preparation using a single dentate carbide
  3. Follow preparation guidelines for a molar to receive a CAPTEK crown
  4. Describe the evidence supporting plaque-reduction by CAPTEK crowns
  5. Understand how this material can lead to a healthier periodontium

The Art and Science of Effective Communication for Non-surgical Periodontal Treatment

Speaker: Karen Davis, RDH, BSDH

Synopsis: Ineffective communication, lack of complete diagnostic data, lack of time and fear of what the patient may think, are some of the common barriers that interfere with existing patients being presented a diagnosis to treat early stages of periodontal disease in the general dental practice. Even though the science has changed greatly over the last several years in regard to our understanding and treatment of periodontal diseases, the incidence of this chronic infection remains alarmingly high in the general population.

This course not only explores common barriers that hinder enrollment into non-surgical treatment but more importantly, provides the solutions to these barriers as a pathway to create healthy foundations for all patients.

Educational objectives: Upon completion of this course, participants should be able to achieve the following:

  1. Identify major barriers to patients seeking optimal periodontal health.
  2. Identify solutions to overcome the barriers.
  3. Identify risk factors for periodontal disease.
  4. Identify benefits of incorporating locally applied anti-microbials into therapy.
  5. Identify keys to effective communication.
