Google is a remarkable company in many ways. On a financial front, you must admire a company that does not sell a physical product on store shelves, but they have had a market cap of more than $200 billion. As an online presence, the spartan search page is known by everyone who visits the Internet on a regular basis. In fact, "Googling" something has become a verb in our modern lexicon.

When I read "The Google Story" by David Vise in 2006, I was fascinated by the development of the most understated Web page on the Internet – the Google home page. According to Vise's article, in the early days of its evolution, the company "invited 16 people to the basement of the Gates building at Stanford, where a team of four from the company observed their behavior." The focus group was divided into pairs, to encourage interaction, as they completed a series of searches using this new Web page. I was impressed by their approach because they literally dissected every element of that page to be certain the user experience was intuitive. Initially, some members of the group sat staring at their screen because they thought the page had not finished loading.

The Google team changed the font size at the bottom of the page to make it clear the page was finished loading. Dentaltown.com shares many things in common with Google. We are the gateway to volumes of information and we have the ability to search and sort this information in a very logical way. Hint: the site-wide search at the top of our Web site is powered by Google. Additionally, our users serve as our best advocates, spreading the word of this phenomenal Web site throughout the dental community. Your participation and contributions improve the professional lives of every community member. Finally, the development of our community has been marked by the addition of many features focused on improving the user experience.

I would like to take this opportunity to survey our readers for feedback. Your input influences our progress and often the best ideas come from our community members.
