6 Dental Marketing Strategies Every Dentist Should Know | Firegang Dental Marketing

What if your dental practice doesn't need more marketing? What if you just need to get more out of the marketing you're already doing?

It's a question I believe more dentists should be asking.

I recently had the opportunity to speak at the Academy of General Dentistry (AGD) about what's actually working in dental marketing today.

After working with more than 1,000 dentists across 47 states over the past decade, I've learned that sustainable practice growth isn't necessarily about who has the biggest advertising budget.

It's about answering three important questions:
  1. Why should a patient choose your practice?
  2. Can potential patients easily find you?
  3. When those patients contact your office, are they actually getting scheduled?
Those three questions are the foundation of six strategies I believe every practice owner should evaluate.

1. Give Patients a Real Reason to Choose You

Ask yourself what makes your dental practice different from the one down the street.

If your answer is a friendly team, experienced dentist, or state-of-the-art technology, you're probably saying the same thing as every other practice in your market.

Patients want tangible reasons to choose you.

Maybe it's early morning appointments, flexible financing, an in-house membership plan, or the convenience of having multiple dental services under one roof.

Those are the differences that can influence a patient's decision.

The question isn't whether you're a great dentist. It's whether patients understand why your practice is the right choice for them.

2. Make Sure Your Marketing Tells the Same Story

One of the most common problems I see is disconnected marketing.

A practice might have one company managing its website, another handling Google Ads, and someone else posting on social media.

But what happens when those messages don't match?

Imagine a patient clicks an advertisement promoting an Invisalign financing offer. They're interested enough to visit your website, but when they get there, they can't find anything about that offer.

Now they're confused, questioning the promotion, and possibly heading straight to a competitor.

You've paid for the click but lost the opportunity.

Consistency across every marketing channel matters more than many practices realize.

3. Stop Relying on Generic Website Content

Your website should give potential patients a preview of what it's like to actually visit your practice.

Stock photography and generic descriptions won't accomplish that.

Real photos of your office, videos introducing your team, patient testimonials, and content that highlights your unique services help build familiarity and trust.

Patients should be able to visit your website and quickly understand what makes your practice special.

Your website shouldn't look and sound like every other dental website in town.

4. Be Visible Where Patients Are Searching

Dental SEO and Google rankings remain important, but the way patients discover dental practices continues to evolve.

Today, practices should be thinking about traditional search, local SEO, social media, Google Business Profiles, and emerging AI-powered search experiences.

Google reviews also deserve consistent attention.

It's not simply about collecting a large number of five-star reviews. Maintaining an ongoing review strategy, responding appropriately, and keeping your online information accurate can support your practice's visibility and credibility.

The goal is to make it easy for potential patients to discover and evaluate your practice wherever they're searching.

5. Understand the Entire New Patient Journey

A new patient rarely moves directly from seeing an advertisement to sitting in your dental chair.

They might search on Google, visit your website, read reviews, compare competitors, and then finally pick up the phone.

Every one of those steps influences whether that patient chooses your practice.

That's why evaluating your marketing solely by clicks, impressions, or website traffic doesn't tell the whole story.

You need to understand what happens after someone discovers your practice.

6. Don't Overlook the Phone Call

This might be the most important strategy of all.

I recently listened to a call from a practice that was struggling with a 20% call conversion rate.

A potential patient called with a broken tooth and significant pain, asking if the office had an appointment available.

The team member politely explained that nothing was available that day.

The patient thanked her and hung up.

There was no offer for the next available appointment. No attempt to collect the patient's information. No effort to find another opportunity to get that patient scheduled.

That was a missed new patient opportunity.

And here's what I want dentists to consider:

If your practice is losing potential patients on the phone, will increasing your advertising budget really solve the problem?

Before spending more money to generate additional leads, make sure your team is maximizing the opportunities you're already receiving.

Final Thoughts

Dental marketing isn't just about getting your practice in front of more people.

It's about helping the right patients find you, giving them a compelling reason to choose you, and making sure your practice is prepared to turn that interest into a scheduled appointment.

Sometimes the biggest growth opportunities aren't found in a larger advertising budget.

They're found in fixing the gaps that are already costing your practice patients.

Which of these six areas do you think dental practices overlook most often?

I'd love to hear your perspective.
