Less Dentistry Is the Best Dentistry: Standing Out in a 52 Dentist Building | Dr. Jennifer Haddad | 627

I just interviewed Dr. Jennifer Haddad, who built a referral-driven dental practice in a Beverly Hills building with 52 dentists!!

Here’s what I learned:

  • “A crowded building can clarify a practice.” Dr. Haddad chose her location despite the other dentists. Her referrals come from being known for a particular approach to care, not from trying to offer everything to everyone.

  • “The smaller treatment still needs a business model.” She makes conservative care viable through time, fees, efficiency, and a patient experience people refer. Owners have to work through those numbers; restraint alone doesn’t pay payroll.

  • “The requested procedure isn’t always the right case.” Patients come to her asking for veneers or Invisalign. She assesses whether the case fits her expertise and refers out when it doesn’t.

  • “A patient’s first question should survive the exam.” She asks why someone came in, listens, and returns to that concern when explaining her findings. Otherwise, a thorough exam can still miss the patient’s reason for being there.

  • “Technology should return time to the room.” Scans and digital X-rays help her show patients what she sees. AI tools also reduce some charting work. The useful measure is whether the team can explain care more clearly and spend more attention on the patient.

  • “A higher fee needs an answer beyond a higher fee.” She said some patients leave over price, while others return because they value the care. That gives an owner a concrete question: what can patients experience and understand that explains the difference?

  • “A familiar patient deserves a fresh exam.” Someone who declined treatment five years ago may have different health, habits, finances, or priorities now. She cautions against treating the chart as a permanent account of the person.

  • “The owner shouldn’t be the practice’s operating system.” Dr. Haddad described losing time to micromanagement. Her aim now is a team that can carry responsibility without waiting for her to touch every task.

The conversation gets into the decisions behind these ideas, including where “less dentistry” becomes difficult in real practice ownership.
