Building a $10M Practice Without Losing Your Freedom | Dr. Blake Hamblin | 624

I just had Dr. Blake Hamblin on the podcast.

He’s grown his practice from around $1.2M, is now seeing 200+ new patients a month, and is building toward a $10–12M practice.

There were a LOT of numbers in this episode...

But honestly, those weren’t the things I wrote down.

It was how he thinks about the practice behind those numbers.

Here’s what I learned:

1. “Marketing doesn’t fix a practice. It introduces more people to whatever already exists.”

Blake’s point was simple: clinical skill and communication should come before turning up marketing.

More leads into a weak system just creates a more expensive weak system.

2. “Your referral pad might be showing you where to grow next.”

Before investing in manjor marketing, he grew by doing more of the dentistry the practice had been referring out.

Tomorrow, pull 30 days of referrals.

What procedures are leaving the building?

3. “Price and affordability are not the same thing.”

A patient may not be able to pay $6,000 today.

They may be able to pay $300 a month.

Before assuming patients “can’t afford treatment,” look at whether the practice has made it realistically affordable.

4. “The first question on the phone tells the patient what the practice cares about.”

Blake doesn’t want the conversation to begin with:

“What insurance do you have?”

The patient called for an appointment.

Keep bringing them back to the schedule.

5. “Before blaming the employee, figure out what kind of mistake it was.”

Blake uses a simple distinction:

Omission = they lacked training, tools, or clarity.

Commission = they knew the standard and chose not to follow it.

Those require very different leadership responses.

6. “A good person can still be the wrong person for your practice.”

Blake fired employees when he took ownership.

Not because they were terrible people.

He already knew their standards and his standards weren’t going to work together.

That distinction matters.

7. “Being right and being effective are two different jobs.”

This came from one of his mentors.

As the owner, being technically right is pretty easy.

Getting another human being to actually hear you, respond and improve?

Different skill.

8. “Maybe location #2 isn’t the next milestone.”

Blake’s still asking what would break at location #1 if he disappeared.

That’s a pretty good question even if you never want another practice:

If you disappeared for 30 days, what stops working?

That answer tells you what you actually own right now…and what still owns you.

Really good conversation & worth listening to this one with your Notes app open.
