4 Goals to Stop Pursuing After 50 (and What to Focus on Instead)

4 Goals to Stop Pursuing After 50 (and What to Focus on Instead)

What if I told you that the goals you chased in your 20s and 30s might actually be keeping you from financial freedom and true happiness today? Because you're a denitst, you’ve likely spent decades grinding, growing your practice, and accumulating wealth. But as you approach 50, it’s time to rethink what success really means.

If you’d rather watch than read, check out this video:

Stop Chasing Career Advancement

Early in your career, it made sense to take on extra hours, grow your patient base, and aim for higher positions. That hard work built the financial stability you enjoy today. But now, ask yourself—do you really want to keep sacrificing time, health, and relationships just to make an extra $50K or $100K a year?

Think about the cost:

  • To generate that extra income, you might need to work an additional 10-15 hours a week.
  •
  • That adds up to 300-500 hours a year—time you could spend with family, improving your health, or actually enjoying your life.

Instead of pushing harder, focus on working smarter.

  • Mentor a younger associate to help them take on more responsibility.
  •
  • Optimize efficiency in your practice so you can earn the same while working less.

Your time is more valuable than ever. Stop maximizing income—start maximizing freedom.

Stop Thinking Bigger is Better

It’s easy to fall into the mindset that success means more. A bigger house, a fancier car, extravagant vacations. But bigger isn’t always better—it’s often just more stress.

Imagine upgrading to a 6,000-square-foot home in your 50s. Sounds great, right? But now you’re dealing with:

  • Higher property taxes
  •
  • Increased maintenance costs
  •
  • The hassle of repairs and upkeep

Do you really want to spend your weekends dealing with contractors and landscaping instead of living your life?

Downsizing can actually give you more freedom. A smaller, more manageable space allows you to focus on what truly matters—your time, your peace of mind, and the experiences that bring you joy.

Stop Accumulating More Stuff

Most high-income earners have way more than they need. But does owning more really make you happier? Or is it just cluttering your life?

Think about it:

  • The extra car in your garage that barely gets driven—yet still costs insurance, maintenance, and depreciation.
  •
  • Closets full of clothes you rarely wear.
  •
  • Gadgets and tech collecting dust after the excitement wore off.

Unless something truly brings you joy, it’s just a distraction that costs money, time, and space.

Instead of upgrading to the latest luxury car every few years, why not put that money into an income-producing asset? Passive income from investments gives you something way more valuable than material possessions—freedom.

Stop Comparing Yourself to Others

One of the most freeing things you can do as you get older is stop caring what others think.

It’s easy to get caught up in comparing your success to your peers. Maybe they own multiple practices or just bought a vacation home in the mountains. But ask yourself:

  • Does their version of success align with your goals?
  •
  • Would you actually enjoy that lifestyle, or are you just chasing status?

Success isn’t about owning more—it’s about building a life that fits your vision. For me, it meant cutting back from full-time dentistry to part-time so I could focus on passive income, investing, and spending more time with my family.

When you stop comparing, you gain clarity and control over what truly matters.

What Really Brings You Joy?

At this stage in life, happiness comes from three key things:

Purpose – Find activities that ignite your passion. Whether it’s learning something new, volunteering, or mentoring others, purpose gives your life direction.

Relationships – Prioritize time with family and close friends. How many summers and holidays do you have left with them? Make every moment count.

Adventures – Seek experiences that create lasting memories. Travel, try new hobbies, and embrace new challenges that bring excitement into your life.

Build Freedom Instead of Chasing More

Instead of focusing on the next promotion or bigger paycheck, shift your mindset to building assets.

If I had known in my 20s what I know now, I would have started investing in income-producing assets sooner. Instead of just working for money, I would have made sure my money was working for me.

Consider investments like:

  • Real estate syndications (my personal favorite)
  •
  • Dividend-paying stocks
  •
  • Buying or investing in a business

These allow you to step away from trading time for money and create wealth that grows independently of your work schedule.

Life after 50 isn’t about chasing another paycheck—it’s about maximizing joy, freedom, and purpose.
