Dental Hygiene Essentials: Tips for Maintaining a Healthy Smile in 2024

Maintaining a smile is perhaps an unwritten resolution for the new year. It's key to good health of mind and body, so it's important to take care of your smile. Moreover, you can't sport a good smile if your teeth and overall health are in tatters.

So what do you do? You simply follow these core dental essentials listed below:

1. Fluoride Toothpaste

There's no dental hygiene without toothpaste, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't be cautious of the type of toothpaste you use. While every paste has its benefits, adding fluoride toothpaste to your brushing routine will ensure increased protection against cavities and infections.

2. Mouthwash

If you want to take your dental hygiene up a notch, then consider getting mouthwash. This can be used after every meal or just before bed at night. It's a useful shield against bad breath and tooth plaque. It's also a great tool for strengthening teeth and gums.

3. Tongue Scraper

Bacteria love the tongue. They camp there and multiply, especially when you don't practice healthy oral hygiene. Sometimes, brushing isn't enough and you wouldn't want to scrape your tongue with a brush like sandpaper on wood. Nonetheless, a better way to go about this is to use a tongue scraper. It gets the job of ridding your mouth of bacteria plaque without harming the tongue.

4. Regular Brushing

All the fluoride toothpaste and soft toothbrushes won't matter if you don't use them regularly. Only regular brushing every morning and night will boost your oral health. So be sure to adopt a brushing routine that optimizes your tooth health.

5. Dental Floss

The last thing anyone wants is to smile only to discover a piece of food lying between their teeth. It's a huge mood killer and if not treated can cause toothache. So where the toothbrush doesn't reach, a dental floss. This tool will help rid you of food particles, preventing the issue of bad breath and toothache.

6. Avoid Smoking

Great oral hygiene isn't just about what you do or take; it also encompasses dropping bad habits like smoking that have detrimental effects on your oral health. Smoking leaves your lips and gums charred and it also causes mouth odour, which isn't good for your dentition and smile.

7. Drink Water Regularly

Drinking water is the easiest tip on this list, but it's often overlooked, and that causes huge dental problems. For example, skipping water intake leaves you dehydrated. Dehydration, in turn, causes bad odour and facilitates bacteria activity in the mouth. Hence, it's important to get those water breaks.

8. Regular Dental Visits

Lastly, every oral hygiene routine is complemented by occasional visits to a dental clinic like One Dental. Regardless of how good your oral routine is, you should still pay a visit to the dentist for regular check-ups just to be sure.

Wrapping Up

Your oral hygiene is as important as any other aspect of your body. Its influence on your health is significant and hence requires utmost attention. Therefore, be sure to follow the dental essentials combined with advice from your local dentist.
