Do I Need Braces If I Have An Overbite?

Do I Need Braces If I Have An Overbite?

What is Overbite?

Let's start with the basics. What's an overbite? How does an overbite appear? Is my bite too big? You might be perplexed. When your back teeth are closed, you have an overbite when your top row of teeth overlaps your bottom row vertically. It could also be thought of as your upper row of teeth protruding further than your lower ones.

Now, it's important to note that not all overbites are regarded as problems that need to be fixed. In point of fact, having a slight overbite is not unusual. However, excessive overbite is problematic and may necessitate orthodontic treatment.

According to top-rated Huntington Orthodontist, Dr. Gellerman Herbst Appliance could be a great treatment for an overbite.

What is viewed as an exorbitantly enormous overbite? Obviously, consulting an experienced orthodontic specialist like Dr. Patel is the best way to be certain. However, the following are some home signs that you have an overbite:

The term "deep bite" or "impinging bite" refers to the situation in which your bottom teeth completely overlap your top teeth, causing your bottom teeth to impact the roof of your mouth when you close your jaw.

An excessive overbite can have an impact on your facial appearance, particularly if it is caused by your jaw or skeletal structure, such as a small lower jaw. You have the appearance of a receding chin or undefined lower jaw.

Your teeth appear out of alignment. A dental overbite can occur when individual teeth (rather than the entire jaw) are not in the correct position. Overbite, crowding, gapping, and twisted teeth can all be corrected by shifting those misaligned teeth.

What causes an overbite?

The shape and/or size of the jaw or the teeth is the most common cause of an overbite. This could indicate that one has insufficient or excessive jaw space to accommodate the size of one's teeth. If the overbite is not corrected, it will cause the teeth to crowd together and grow crooked if there isn't enough room, or it will cause the teeth to be too far apart if the jaw is too big.

An overbite can be caused in infants and children by behaviors like sucking the thumb, using a pacifier on a consistent basis, and using a bottle too much, which pushes the tongue against the teeth.

Chronic nail biting and chewing on writing implements, like pencils or other items, can lead to an overbite in adults and teens. An overbite can also result from missing teeth that aren't fixed promptly. The American Dental Association estimates that nearly 70% of children have overbite symptoms.

Can an overbite be fixed without braces?

A few grown-ups with extreme skeletal overbite and jaw issues need more than supports to address the issue and medical procedure is expected to reposition the jaw. Other treatments like surgery or tooth extractions must be used in conjunction with braces. For extractions, an orthodontist refers patients to a dentist or oral surgeon.

Because children and some teens have growing jaws, braces can help move the jaw into the right position, reducing the likelihood of surgery.

A palate expander, which expands the size of the jaw to accommodate crowded teeth in a small jaw, may be included in early treatment for children. A larger jaw eliminates the need to remove teeth and makes it easier for braces to move teeth into the right position.

How Much Do Braces Cost To Fix an Overbite?

The price of braces depends on many factors, but you can expect comprehensive overbite correction to cost a rough average of $4,000 to $10,000. It may seem like a significant investment, but the results are worth it. The confidence you gain along with your brand-new smile is truly priceless.
