iCLEAN - The Mouthwash With a Purpose

iCLEAN - The Mouthwash With a Purpose

Iodine and baking soda have at least one thing in common – both have had countless uses over the decades.

Iodine offers similar versatility as the white baking powder with purposes ranging from disinfecting external wounds and use as a disinfectant, to treating thyroid deficiencies, use in photography development and as a key ingredient in print inks and dyes.

In a previous post we once described baking soda as a Swiss Army knife in a box. If that is true, iodine is a tinker toy in a bottle.

There are two forms of iodine: monoatomic iodine (elemental diatomic iodine), and molecular iodine (free iodine).  Monoatomic iodine is usually dark colored, and the type used in medicine pre-surgery and to treat acute and chronic wounds.

Molecular iodine is often found in skin and hair products and is good for healthy skin, nails, hair and teeth.

“We want people to experience molecular iodine,” iClean spokesperson Phyllis B. Siegel said in a recent phone interview.  “Molecular iodine vaporizes, and this vapor penetrates into the gum line and that gives users a level of clean that’s refreshingly pleasant and real.”

Iodine is an essential nutrient, but the body cannot make it.  Iodine is only available through consumption and is most often found in seafood, yogurts, cheeses, breads and cereal.  Some fruits and vegetables also contain iodine, though amounts vary depending upon the soil and fertilizer used.

Earlier this decade Biomedical Development Corporation saw the oral health possibilities free iodine offers and created iClean Mouth Rinse, a unique rinse which contains just two ingredients:  iodine and a non-sugar flavoring to give it a clean, refreshing taste.

Most mouthwash products contain a bevy of ingredients to combat bad breath and help control plaque and gingivitis.  A few common ingredients found in mouthwashes include cetylpyridinium chloride; chlorhexidine; essential oils; fluoride and peroxide.

Not iClean mouth rinse.  When asked why they use only two ingredients in their custom mouthwash Siegel stated, “Why add a bunch of junk to it and cause havoc with allergies?”

That no-nonsense, pragmatic approach has allowed iClean to stay viable despite it only being available by direct order.

iClean comes in just one flavor and one 8-oz size (45 teaspoons) because in the words of Siegel, “We’re not selling-Kool-Aid.”

The company recommends gargling once a day for 30-seconds, or as Siegel noted, “Just long enough to sing happy birthday to yourself three times.”

Admittedly the cost of a bottle of iClean isn’t cheap, but $30 will buy you 45-days of use and includes shipping & handling.

Wholesale rates are available for dental offices and iClean attributes much of their brand awareness and popularity in dental circles to the word-of-mouth advertising from impressed dentists recommending the product.

Regarding the commercial interest in their product and the success of their low-key advertising, Siegel said, “We’re amazed every day at the response we’re getting.”

With a laugh she added, “Every order we get we like to say, ‘It’s time to switch your swish.’”
