Insurance as a Dentist: Do You Need It?

Insurance as a Dentist: Do You Need It?

To not have health insurance with dental coverage is a bad idea for patients, and they often find that out the hard way unfortunately. However, what about the dentists themselves? Do they need extra insurance policies such as malpractice insurance, or even life insurance? After all, almost every dentist working in a clinic usually has premium health plans implemented for them already, so would it be a waste to pay for more insurance?

There is Only One Right Answer

Yes, dentists do need insurance plans other than the standard health plans at their clinic, and that’s the only answer that can make sense. As a matter of fact, dentists, like most other medical professionals with autonomy, require additional insurance policies even more than their patients do.

This is not to undermine the fact that dentists enjoy excellent dental plans by default, while a lot of their patients can’t afford to. At the same time though, most patients don’t get sued for millions, as much as dentists and doctors do either!

Malpractice Insurance

The biggest fear which often debilitates dentists or any other physician from taking timely steps, is the fear of being sued for malpractice later on. It’s a real problem, because the job of any physician will always involve taking at least a few risks, and unless they are willing to take those risks, the patients will not always receive the treatment which they need.

On the other hand, there have been multiple cases where the patient has sued the dentist, even after the dentist did his/her best and succeeded!

If you don’t want to work under the constant fear of paying through your nose for a mistake that you may or may not have been able to avoid, malpractice insurance is a must have for not just dentists, but every physician in general.

Professional liability insurance is the most common type of malpractice insurance that dentists opt for, but there is also the option to take Occurrence Malpractice Insurance, which covers the dentist even after he/she has retired from the job.

Life Insurance

In the standard opinion of the financialexperts, everyone needs life insurance, so why should dentists be exempted from this particular generalization? There is no reason to make that exception, which is why dentists need life insurance, just like any other profession!

To find the best life insurance carriers in 2019, check out Insurance Geek. Here you can find a plan tailored to your profession and lifestyle. Depending on multiple factors such as where you are practicing, your age, your income and your health records, the premiums will vary quite a bit though.

Disability Insurance: Own Occupation

Disability insurance for Own Occupation means that if due to some unfortunate cause or the other, you are unable to practice dentistry at some point in your life, you will collect the disability checks from your dental insurance company, but at the same time, you will also be free to pursue any other career, if you can.

These are pretty much the only three types of insurance policies which medical professionals in general and dentists in particular need to consider getting, but just in case you are unfortunate enough to work in a facility somewhere that doesn’t put their dentists on a health plan, you need to get it yourself, or change jobs!
