Knowing I've written two books describing oral/systemic links, the latest, Primal Dentistry, devoting an entire chapter to dental ozone, Howard Farran requested I post an excellent article by journalist Celeste McGovern that introduces several of ozone's critical uses in dentistry, one of which is reversing tooth decay, especially when a compliant patient respects Steinman's fluid flow in teeth via their diet. The article is called Ozone gas: reversing tooth decay in the "What Doctors Don't Tell You" online magazine. Read it here: www.wddty.com/magazine/2018/november/ozone-gas-reversing-tooth-decay.html.
It is a great article, but I do want to point out one thing. It, like many practitioners do, focuses on oral bacterial control as opposed to oral microbial control, so for instance at the end, it illustrates a California dentist for whom ozone has transformed his treatment of root caries partly because it "prevents bacterial penetration to the pulp". It certainly does that and can even help calm a lightly exposed pulp, but that is not my point here. Most root caries is yeast-driven. I only mention it because it brings to the fore one of my concerns about dentistry – its focus on oral bacterial profiles and the corresponding attempt to wipe out those only with various products. But of course once you wipe out one set of microbes it just opens up the real estate for others to populate. Yeasts are but one possibility. Fungi, like Candida albicans magnify the action and stickiness of any remaining acid-forming bacteria in plaques to create oral problems like rampant root caries. The beauty of ozone is that it has an almost immediate kill time for yeasts, fungi and parasites as well as spirochetes and other bacteria while also setting up the proper alkaline environment for the beneficial microbes to repopulate. Again I encourage you to read this article!
Howard also recommended I mention that I offer a 36 AGD-approved CEU video course on the dental professional side of PrimalDentistry.org that includes 18 videos covering a broad range of topics important to dentistry. I developed this course to help both dentists and their clients (present and future!) win! One internationally-known mentor (who will publish an article in November 2019 that should change dentistry forever) once quipped that one of my hour-long videos succinctly presented what he spent eight hours teaching and is why I chose a streaming on-demand video format. It is the most effective and economical way I can bring practitioners a broad range of oral/systemic connections many hadn't considered implementing along with the accompanying supplemental materials designed to aid in their implementation and also patient education. I thought it important for dentists to share these videos with their staff and also patients in the reception area. I want it to save practitioner operatory time.
Many dentists haven't thought about the various impacts their profession can have on their own health, such as their ability to methylate well or have excellent gut health that can express later as autoimmunity problems, thyroid issues and so on. We entered this profession for many good reasons, but I do want practitioners to know how they can mitigate some of the environmental exposures they or their families experience. Yes we want to serve others, but not at the expense of our own future health.
Last, I want to put it out there that I know there is a lot of competition for clients and also that dentists wear a target on their backs for so many reasons. I also know dentists are getting squeezed financially. My favorite bonus video for this course is Fee For Service Is Killing Us! And Our Teeth! As I describe it: "A top tier adhesive dentist who provides lasting dentistry with far fewer downstream complications deserves the freedom to treatment plan in a way that best serves his clients while also keeping more of what he/she earns. These startling business revelations can help you get off the production-based treadmill you may feel you’re on.
