Inside Carlsen’s Brain: My Most Important Financial Resources Douglas Carlsen, DDS

Taken literally, this article should be blank. All the financial resources out there in the information era can be overwhelming. In this article, I list three of my favorite resources for each category. If you engage even one item a week from this list, your financial success will soar over the next few months.

Videos

Consuelo Mack's WealthTrack
Mack has the best financial video archive in the business. She conducts weekly half-hour interviews with the leading sources of financial information. Jason Zweig, John Bogle, Bill Miller and Robert Shiller and others provide prudent information. (YouTube.com/User/WealthTrack/Videos)

Larry Swedroe Videos
Swedroe has written several books that I cite repeatedly. His 14 how-to videos are short and highly educational. (YouTube.com/user/tedpearlman/playlists)

Carlsen Videos
This may seem like a shameless plug, yet the 30 videos have amassed over 24,000 views and I think you'll find them worthwhile. (YouTube.com/User/DrDougCarlsen)

Blogs

The Oblivious Investor Mike Piper, the great financial simplifier, has compiled the best articles from leading financial gurus like Wade Pfau, Allan Roth, Larry Swedroe and Rick Ferri. He also provides great tax, investing and social security advice along with basic economic content. (ObliviousInvestor.com)

Vanguard Blog
This isn't Vanguard advertising. It's a treasure trove of guest articles about savvy investing, personal finance, retirement, college funding and tax strategy. (VanguardBlog.com)

Wade Pfau's Retirement Research Blog
Pfau is the hottest name in financial research today. His blog has all the sophisticated investment information one would ever need. (WPfau.blogspot.com)

Books

The Little Book of Common Sense Investing by John Bogle
This is my all-time favorite financial book. It's an easy read with all the fundamentals one needs to retire in style.

The Millionaire Next Door by Tom Stanley and William Danko
Stanley and Danko, both professors at SUNY Albany, provide research-based evidence on the lives and spending habits of the wealthy. This is not only an easy read, it's fun! Doctors are key characters in the book. Since this best seller was originally published, Stanley has published more books, any of which is appropriate for dentists.

The White Coat Investor by Jim Dahle, MD
This book, published in 2014 and primarily written for physicians, is the perfect book for any dentist. It's an easy and fast read that covers all the financial basics. Also, the author had all his educational loans paid off with a net worth of over $1 million by age 38.

Podcasts

Note: Many podcasts are blatant advertisements for your investment dollars. There are several, though, that provide savvy investing materials. All of the podcasts below can be found at iTunes Store for free.

LearnVest
This company is new, young and smart. For $400 down and $19 per month, full financial planning is available. This includes estate planning, saving and debt advice, college funding, tax strategies and more. They do not manage investments. On the site, there are great free financial articles available. (LearnVest.com)

Bankrate.com
This is my go-to site for any financial calculations. Also, mortgage, auto loan, credit card and other institutions are evaluated for the consumer. (BankRate.com)

Comprehensive Finance Websites

ItsDeductibleOnline.com

Clark Howard
Howard is a one-man Consumer Reports. He provides travel deals, shopping advice, insurance advice, reports on scams and basically any consumer concern. His entertaining style is always welcome. (ClarkHoward.com)
