Patient Reviews: Winning the Online Popularity Contest

Like it or not, reviews are here to stay. Recently, we analyzed the over 11,000 reviews scraped from the internet, from our over 140 practices connected to review management software. The results might surprise you.

Dig into this data:
The average rating of all dentists in our pool of 141 - 4.82 stars
The average practice has 80 online reviews
Google houses the most reviews for dentists, followed by Facebook & then Yelp

93% of all the reviews left for dental practices were 5-star reviews.  Compare that to the 2.9% who left negative reviews, and it's obvious, people are not going online to complain as often as they are going to say something positive about your practice. That said, those 1-star reviews did occur at least once for the majority of the practices in the pool. 52% of all dental practices have at least one, 1-star review.  (If your reputation has gone unscathed as of yet, you are in the slight minority.)

The key takeaway in all this analysis is this: the voice of the crowd wins.  If (and when?) you find yourself faced with a one-star review, know that you are not alone. Asking for reviews to your happy patients is important because it minimizes the impact of a 1-star reviewer's vent session.  If you have 79 positive reviews and only 1 negative, guess who looks like the crazy person?  Asking for those positive reviews is like an insurance policy against the crazies.

Obviously, none of us like to be ripped apart in a review, but if you do find yourself faced with one, we can help. Remember, patients aren't bound by the same restrictions you are through HIPAA.  They can say whatever they want in their reviews, but you do not have that same freedom.  Check out our free guide on how to respond to a negative review.
