Posted: September 7, 2012
Chicago (Sept. 7, 2012) - The American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) welcomes John M. Forbes, MBA, as its new executive director effective Sept. 24. He succeeds Alice DeForest who is retiring after 26 years in that position.

Forbes brings extensive leadership experience in the health care field having worked at two fortune 50 companies, two medical start-ups, and two global nonprofit organizations.

Most recently, Forbes served as Chief Operating Officer and Associate Executive Director of the American Academy of Pediatrics, a 60,000-member professional services organization. As such, he helped the organization increase its membership, improve its financial and operational effectiveness, and strengthen its capacity to serve children and the pediatricians who care for them. He established the office of international affairs, developed a performance management system to develop and execute the organization’s strategic plan, and guided the Board of Directors in its governance responsibility.  As head of the international office, he traveled extensively in the Middle East and Asia.

Previously, Forbes was Chief Executive Officer of the Missouri-Illinois Regional Blood Center, one of the largest community blood centers in the American Red Cross system.
In his new position, Forbes will lead the operations and staff of the American Academy of Periodontology, and will report to the Board of Trustees. He will work in tandem with the Board to enhance and implement the organization’s strategic goals.

“John’s background in both medical nonprofits as well as healthcare corporations makes him the ideal selection for this position,” said Academy President Dr. Pamela McClain. “On behalf of the AAP Board of Trustees, we are thrilled he will be taking the helm of our 98-year old organization.”

“It is a privilege to have been selected as the executive director of this prestigious organization,” said Forbes. “I am truly excited by the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead and look forward to working with the Board, members, and staff to continue to build a world-class professional organization.”

Forbes is a member of the American Association of Medical Society Executives and the American Society of Association Executives, and serves as vice chairman of the Board of Our Children’s Homestead, a Chicago-based foster care and adoption services agency. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Political Science from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, and a Masters of Business Administration in Marketing and International Management from Loyola University in Chicago.
