MONTVALE, N.J. – January 25, 2011 – PDR Network and The Doctors Company today announced the launch of “Know the Label” – a national campaign to educate physicians and improve their knowledge of ever-changing FDA-approved medication labeling.

According to PDR Network, one in four (25 percent) of FDA-approved drugs included in the 2011 edition of the Physicians’ Desk Reference (PDR) were new or had clinically significant changes to their labels since 2010. This frequent change in drug labeling poses a significant challenge to busy physicians in both providing optimal patient care and minimizing professional liability. Professional liability carriers report that approximately 30 percent of medical malpractice suits include some drug-related aspects in the complaint. In those cases, the then-current FDA-approved drug labeling is often the standard to which physicians are held by the courts.

It is the professional responsibility of each physician to stay current on all label changes to the medications they most frequently prescribe. The “Know the Label” program will help address this issue by providing a new online service where physicians can earn free Continuing Medical Education (“CME”) credit for reading full FDA-approved medication labeling. The free CME program, easily accessed online at PDR.net, offers the credit required by each physician to maintain their license, while providing the knowledge to provide better patient care and potentially reduce their professional liability.

“We know that physicians and other prescribers are increasingly busy and can struggle to find time to stay current with all the changes in pharmaceutical labeling,” explained Janet Woodcock, M.D., director of the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research at the FDA. “We congratulate The Doctors Company and PDR Network for finding a practical and novel way for physicians to access the full updated labeling through electronic means and have it available at the point of prescribing. This effort dovetails nicely with our Safe Use Initiative and our intent to reduce preventable harm from pharmaceutical products.”

A White Paper commissioned by PDR Network from the medical malpractice defense specialists Vaslas Lepowsky Hauss & Danke LLP, and recently published in the Food and Drug Law Institute’s Update magazine surveys hundreds of medical malpractice lawsuits in key jurisdictions and highlights the direct link between FDA-approved labeling and the standard to which physicians are held in U.S. court. According to the paper, physicians need to take an active role in understanding ongoing changes to drug labels – their first reading of the full FDA-approved drug label should not occur during trial preparation.

This legal review was commissioned by PDR Network to underscore the link between full FDA-approved labeling and professional liability. For 65 years it has been the mission of PDR Network to support physicians, prescribers and other healthcare professionals by deliver this important drug information allowing them to both safely treat their patients and potentially reduce their professional liability.
