California Dental Association Elects Pediatric Dentist as New President

Sacramento, CA – A pediatric dentist with more than 30 years of experience has been installed as CDA’s new president for 2011. Andrew P. Soderstrom, DDS, who owns a practice in Modesto, outlined his vision and goals for the organization during CDA’s recent House of Delegates meeting.

“I am eager to work with volunteers on the goals and directives that make CDA the premier dental association in the country – supporting members in their practices, especially through these tough economic times; engaging members through communication; and helping CDA improve and grow as an association,” Soderstrom said.

The new president, who sees himself as “just one of a dedicated, hard-working team of CDA volunteers,” graduated from the University of the Pacific Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry in 1983 and earned his pediatric certificate from the University of California, San Francisco, in 1985.

Soderstrom is an active leader, volunteer and strong advocate for children’s oral health. He has been involved with the California Society of Pediatric Dentists, the California Society of Dentistry for Children and the Dental Advisory Committee for Modesto Junior College. As president of the Stanislaus Dental Society, Soderstrom was instrumental in developing school-based oral health screenings for children under the Kindergarten Oral Health Requirement (AB 1433), enacted in 2007. Since 2001, Soderstrom has also served on the national level as a delegate to the American Dental Association.

Through these experiences, Soderstrom brings with him to the presidency the valuable ability to collaborate.

“During 2011, I look forward to collaborating with my colleagues to improve the profession, the
communities in which we serve, and the lives of children and adults through education as well as
oral health care programs and initiatives,” Soderstrom said.

Having served as a volunteer with CDA since 2000, Soderstrom assumes this new leadership role at a challenging time for the profession.

“The economic downturn as well as state budget cuts have further impacted the ability of millions of that dentists – experts in oral health care – work together to identify ways to overcome these barriers.”

In addition to his community involvement to improve children’s oral health, Soderstrom has been a long-standing member of the Modesto Rotary Club. While serving as president for 2003-2004, Soderstrom was part of the leadership for The Rotary Centennial Junction, a volunteer effort to beautify a non-motorized transportation trail and linear park.

Soderstrom and his wife, Donna, have two children, Matt and Jill. His grandfather, Ernest
Soderstrom, DDS, was CDA’s president for 1944-45; and his father, Phillip Soderstrom, DDS, was a CDA trustee for 1973-1975. His mother, Liz Soderstrom, is a retired dental hygienist and worked as a volunteer faculty member at the Dugoni School of Dentistry; and his siblings, Peter Soderstrom, DDS, and Susan Soderstrom, DDS, are both practicing dentists and CDA members.

The California Dental Association is the non-profit organization representing organized dentistry in California. Founded in 1870, CDA supports its members in their practices and service to the public through innovation in education, advocacy and related programs. CDA also contributes to the oral health of Californians through various comprehensive programs and advocacy. CDA’s membership consists of more than 24,000 dentists, making it the largest constituent of the American Dental Association. For more information, visit cda.org.
