ADA Urges Aetna to Reverse Plan Ending Paper Checks to Out-of-Network Dentists

The American Dental Association is urging Aetna to reverse a decision to stop issuing paper checks to out-of-network dentists, warning that the change may conflict with payment-choice laws in several states. As of the association’s July 22 report, Aetna had not responded to the request.

According to the ADA, ending paper checks makes it harder for out-of-network providers to receive their preferred form of payment unless they join Aetna’s network. The association is advising affected dentists to contact Aetna and their state insurance commissioner and to review state laws that may protect payment choice. The ADA said it is working with state dental associations on the issue.

The dispute follows a broader push by dental plans to move providers onto electronic payments. The ADA recently objected to a Delta Dental of California policy that charged dentists a weekly fee to continue receiving paper checks. The association has cautioned that some electronic options carry hidden costs, particularly virtual credit card payments, which are processed through card networks and typically incur processing fees rather than following the standard electronic funds transfer method.

The ADA has compiled guidance to help practices evaluate payment options, including advice to confirm whether a basic, fee-free electronic transfer meets federal standards before enrolling with a third-party vendor.

The association described the situation as a developing story and said it would share additional information with members as it becomes available.
