American Board of Endodontics Announces New Directors
CHICAGO (Aug. 4, 2009) — The American Board of Endodontics (ABE) confirmed three members to its Board of Directors during the 2009 American Association of Endodontists’ (AAE) recent Annual Session in Orlando, Fla. The board members include: Ashraf F. Fouad, D.D.S., M.S., of Baltimore, Md.; James D. Johnson, D.D.S., M.S., of Seattle, Wash.; and Karl Keiser, D.D.S., M.S., of Boerne, Texas.
Dr. Ashraf F. Fouad has been a Diplomate of the ABE since 1995, a member of the Board since 2007 and was elected Treasurer at the Annual Session. He has been an active member of several AAE committees, and taken on a number of leadership roles, including serving as chair of the Research and Scientific Affairs Committee and Associate Editor of the Editorial Board Committee. Dr. Fouad is currently a professor and chairman of the Department of Endodontics, Prosthodontics and Operative Dentistry at the University of Maryland. He is also the director of the Postgraduate Endodontics Dental School at the University of Maryland. He received his B.D.S. in 1982 and a higher dental diploma in endodontics and restorative dentistry from Cairo University in Egypt. Dr. Fouad received his Certificate of Endodontics, M.S., and D.D.S. from the University of Iowa.
Dr. James D. Johnson has been a member of the AAE since 1983 and has served as AAE representative to the American Dental Education Association’s Council on Hospitals and Advanced Education Programs since 2008. A Diplomate of the ABE since 1988, Dr. Johnson has participated actively in the AAE through his committee work with the Educational Affairs and Governmental Affairs Committees. He is chair of the Endodontics Department in the School of Dentistry at the University of Washington, a post he has held since 2003. He received his D.D.S. from Northwestern University Dental School in 1969 and his M.S. from the same institution in 1985, when he also earned his certificate in endodontics. Dr. Johnson has also served as chair of the Endodontics Department and professor at the Naval Postgraduate Dental School in Bethesda, Md., and as chairman of the Research Department at the Naval Postgraduate Dental School.
Dr. Karl Keiser, a Diplomate of the ABE since 2001, has served on many AAE committees and was District V Director on the AAE Board of Directors between 2006 and 2009. Dr. Keiser received his D.D.S. from the Indiana School of Dentistry in 1981, his certificate of endodontics from the University of Michigan in 1995 and his M.S. from the Horace Rackham School of graduate studies in 1996. He is currently clinical associate professor at the University of Texas Health Science Center’s Dental School, having previously served as program director for advanced education in endodontics. He was an associate professor at the University of Tennessee Dental School and adjunct associate professor of Clinical Surgery at Dartmouth College between 1989 and 1993. Dr. Keiser is also a fellow of both the American and International Colleges of Dentistry.
The American Association of Endodontists sponsors the American Board of Endodontics. Founded in 1964, the American Board of Endodontics is the only certifying board for the specialty of endodontics and is recognized by the American Dental Association.
ABE Diplomate status is awarded to qualified candidates who have demonstrated diagnostic skill, clinical proficiency and professional judgment of a level that promotes the highest quality of care for patients. They have taken an examination administered by a panel of peer experts and have demonstrated an exemplary level of knowledge, understanding and clinical expertise in endodontics.
