Howard University Dental School Dean Named to Nation¹s Dental Accreditation Commission
WASHINGTON (Dec. 11, 2008) -- Leo E. Rouse, D.D.S., dean of the Howard University College of Dentistry, has been selected to serve on the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) the accrediting body for all dental education programs in the United States.
Rouse was selected for the appointment by the American Dental Education Association (ADEA). which includes representatives from all U.S. and Canadian dental schools, numerous allied and postdoctoral dental education programs, corporations, faculty and students. He will serve as one of ADEA¹s four commissioners on the body, which is an arm of the American Dental Association (ADA).
As one of the 30 CODA commissioners, Rouse will help formulate and approve accreditation standards, establish policies and procedures for conducting the accreditation program, determine and publicize program accreditation status and appoint consultants and site visitors to assist in accreditation activities.
³This is a personal privilege for me and an honor to represent our academic health science community and Howard University on a national commission that is responsible for ensuring quality and continuous improvement of dental and dental-related education,² Rouse said.
CODA members include dentists, other educators, employers, the dental licensing community and the public.
Rouse¹s appointment is pending final approval by the ADEA House of Delegates at its March 2009 meeting. His four-year term will begin at the close of the ADA¹s 2009 annual session.
For four years, Dean Rouse has led the College of Dentistry, which was established in 1881 and is the fifth oldest dental school in the nation.
As a teaching and patient care institution, it has trained thousands of highly skilled dental professionals. Its graduates are currently serving communities in 40 states and 53 foreign countries.
