Dr. Franklin S. Weine, a 1957 alumnus of the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) College of Dentistry, was awarded the College’s Distinguished Dental Alumnus Award Award at the College’s 2006 Reunion Feb. 24.
The award is the highest honor that is bestowed by the College and is presented to an alumnus who has brought honor to the University of Illinois and its College of Dentistry through important contributions to dentistry or in other endeavors.
Dr. Weine, a resident of Olympia Fields, IL, also earned his MS in endodontics from Indiana University. For 23 years, he was Professor and Director of graduate endodontics at Loyola University Chicago and now holds the rank of Professor Emeritus. He also is Visiting Professor of Endodontics at Osaka Dental University in Osaka, Japan.
The sixth edition of his textbook, Endodontic Therapy, recently was published by Mosby/Harcourt/Elsevier; various editions have been published in seven languages.
Dr. Weine is a Diplomate of the American Board of Endodontics and a Fellow of both the American and International Colleges of Dentistry. Among the 88 papers of his published in peer-reviewed journals have been the first article written on the potential canal configurations of the maxillary first molar and the initial studies on preparation of curved canals.
In addition to his writing, lecturing, and teaching, Dr. Weine has kept a part-time clinical practice limited to endodontics in downtown Chicago since 1966.
