Polydopamine vs. GIC: Advancing Dental Adhesion Mechanisms

Posted: January 17, 2025
The study compared the adhesive properties of Polydopamine (PD) and Glass Ionomer Cement (GIC) on enamel and dentin substrates. PD, inspired by mussel adhesion mechanisms, showed superior bonding to enamel and dentin compared to GIC. SEM analysis revealed fewer microcracks and higher bond quality with PD on enamel. Shear bond strength testing confirmed PD's significantly higher bond strength on enamel than GIC. The study suggests PD as a promising alternative adhesive in restorative dentistry, with further research needed for long-term efficacy assessment.
