UIC Book Honored

UIC College of Dentistry’s ‘Dentofacial Complex’ Book Honored
Posted: July 7, 2005

The Dentofacial Complex: Lectures of Dr. Allan G. Brodie, published by the University of Illinois at Chicago College of Dentistry Press, won an Apex 2005 Award of Excellence in Communications Concepts’ 17th annual Awards for Publication Excellence competition in the One-of-a-Kind Medical Publications category.

Communications Concepts is writing and editing think tank based in Virginia outside Washington, DC.

The book was begun by Dr. Brodie, longtime Dean of the College and Head of the Department of Orthodontics. After Dr. Brodie’s death in 1976, several alumni and staff of the College worked for decades to complete the book, which finally was published in 2004.

“The book has garnered a lot of interest, both in terms of orders and in media coverage,” said William S. Bike, Director of Advancement and Alumni Affairs Communications and one of the book’s editors. “Reviewer Dr. Eugene D. Tunick wrote of reading through Dr. Brodie’s lectures in the book, ‘Why would you listen to a well-restored recording of Enrico Caruso, or watch a great silent film, or look at magnificent paintings in the Louvre? The quality of these lectures were of such a high standard that even now, it is both an education and a pleasure to attend classes with one of the grand masters of dental teaching.’

“This Apex Award recognizes that high standard, and the College is honored that Communications Concepts has acknowledged the book’s quality,” Bike continued.

“With close to 5,000 entries, competition was exceptionally intense,” said John DeLellis of Communications Concepts. DeLellis and Carolyn Mulford, Christine Turner, and Bill Londino, editors of the publication Writing that Works, were judges for the contest.

The Dentofacial Complex is available in hardcover for $19.95 and in paperback for $14.95.
