Firegang Dental Marketing Explains: Why Dentists Need to Understand Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)

By Becky Spicer, Vice President of Firegang Dental Marketing

For years, dental practices have focused on one big question: How do we get our website to show up higher on Google?

And while that's still incredibly important, there's a new question dentists need to start asking:

Is my practice showing up when patients ask AI tools to recommend a dentist?

More patients are turning to tools like ChatGPT, Google's AI search features, and other AI-powered platforms to research dental treatments, compare options, and find local providers.

This is where Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) comes into play.

And no, it's not just another marketing acronym.

What's the Difference Between SEO and AEO?

Traditional SEO focuses on helping your dental practice appear in search engine results.

For example, when someone searches "dentist near me" or "dental implants in Atlanta," SEO helps determine whether your practice appears in those results.

AEO takes things a step further.

Instead of simply trying to appear in a list of search results, AEO focuses on making your website a useful, credible source of information that AI-powered tools can reference when answering patient questions.

Think about the difference between these two searches:

Traditional Google search: "Dental implants near me"

AI-powered search: "Who is a good dental implant dentist near me who offers sedation and financing?"

The first search typically produces a list of practices to compare.

The second may produce a direct answer that mentions only a few providers.

That's a pretty significant difference.

And it's one of the reasons dental practices need to start thinking beyond traditional rankings.

Three Things Dentists Should Be Paying Attention To

The good news is that preparing your practice for AI search doesn't mean throwing out everything you've already done for SEO.

In fact, a strong SEO foundation is still incredibly valuable.

But there are three areas I encourage practice owners to look at more closely.

1. Does Your Website Actually Answer Patient Questions?

Take a look at your dental implant page.

Does it explain who qualifies for implants, what the procedure involves, how long recovery takes, and what patients should expect financially?

Or does it mainly talk about how your practice offers beautiful smiles and advanced technology?

AI search tools need helpful, specific information to reference.

The more clearly your website answers real patient questions, the more useful it becomes to both potential patients and AI-powered search platforms.

2. Is Your Practice Information Consistent Online?

Your practice name, address, phone number, and other important business details should be consistent across your website, Google Business Profile, and relevant online directories.

Inconsistent information can make it harder for search systems to identify and verify accurate information about your practice.

This has always mattered for local SEO, and it remains important as AI search continues to develop.

3. Are You Creating Content for Patients or Just Search Engines?

This is a big one.

Too many dental websites still have service pages filled with generic descriptions that could apply to almost any practice.

Patients want answers to specific questions.

Things like:
  • Is Invisalign painful?
  • How long do dental implants last?
  • Will my insurance cover a crown?
  • What sedation options are available for anxious patients?
Creating helpful content around these questions doesn't just improve the patient experience. It also gives AI-powered search tools more relevant information to work with.

What Should Dental Practices Do Next?

My advice is not to abandon SEO or rush into an entirely new marketing strategy.

Instead, start by evaluating what your current website actually communicates.

Look at your most important service pages. Are they informative? Do they address real patient concerns? Is your practice information accurate and consistent?

You may find that relatively straightforward content improvements can make your website more helpful for patients while also supporting your visibility in both traditional and AI-powered search.

At Firegang Dental Marketing, we're having more conversations with dentists about how these changes are affecting practice visibility and what they should be doing to prepare.

If you're curious about how your own practice is positioned, you're welcome to schedule a complimentary Practice Growth Assessment. We can take a look at your current marketing foundation, identify potential gaps, and discuss opportunities for improvement.

The Bottom Line

SEO isn't going away.

Google rankings, local visibility, online reviews, and well-optimized websites still matter.

But the way patients research and choose dental providers is evolving.

SEO helps patients find your practice. AEO helps make your practice's information available when AI tools answer their questions.

Neither guarantees that a patient will choose your practice, but both can play an important role in making sure you're part of the conversation.

I'm curious what other practice owners are seeing. Have any of your new patients mentioned finding your office through ChatGPT or another AI tool?

I'd love to hear what you're experiencing.
